Explain the following Key Words: 1X5= 5 Marks

(a) Pardons:The Church sold slips of paper for money, that would allegedly forgive people’s
sins and send them to Heaven.
(b) Renaissance :A time period that stretched from the mid 15th
to mid 17th century in Europe, which caused innovations in the field of science, engineering
arts and maths that would shape our modern world “It means the rebirth of learning.”

(c) Trade: The activity of buying, selling, or exchanging goods or services between people, firms,
or countries.
(d) Pope : The Bishop of Rome as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
(e) Religion : A religion is a set of beliefs that is passionately held by a group of people that is
reflected in a world view and in expected beliefs and actions.

Write down the following questions with proper explanation:

1. How do you explain the concept of Reformation? 2 Marks

Ans: The Reformation was a time in the 15thcentury, where the only church in Europe for about a
thousand years. However, in the 16th century, the church focused more on power, politics, and money
rather than religion. This caused the church to split into two churches. The Protestant Church and
the Catholic Church.

2. What are the major causes of Reformation? Explain it in your own words. 3 Marks
The major causes of Reformation are:
The bad state of the Catholic Church: The bishops, some priests and some nuns became power-
hungry and they didn’t care about religion. They taught people one thing, but did the opposite
The Church Taxes: Everyone in Europe had to pay one-tenth of their income to the church which
people disliked, as the church spent the money on themselves and not for the people or any religious
purpose.
The Kings and the Pope: The Pope was the most powerful man in Europe which the kings of Europe
disliked. Almost one-third of the land in Europe belonged to the Catholic Church.
The rebirth of Learning-People/thinkers during the Renaissance period discovered that not all the
things the Church taught was absolutely accurate.
Pardons: The Church sold slips of paper for money, that would allegedly forgive people’s
sins and send them to heaven.
All of the reasons above made the people believe that the Church was getting selfish and corrupted,
which caused the Reformation. However, in a few sentences it can be said that the reason the
Reformation occurred was because the Church forgot their lane and as they interrupted with politics
and forgetting about the role/purpose in religion.

1. What are the causes of scientific inventions during Renaissance time? 2 Marks

Anshe causes of scientific inventions during the Renaissance time were:


1)War-To make new weapons and other things for war.
2)Building and transport-To build new bridges, canals, roads, transport, buildings and etc.
3)Trade and industry-To help trade and industry to grow.

2. How did scientific ideas bring positive changes during Renaissance time? 3 Marks

Anshe scientific ideas brought changes during the Renaissance time due to a couple of reasons, People had
built weapons which the city-states utilized for both offense and defence. There were better roads, canals and
bridges to transport good fast. There were inventions which helped people to navigate in the sea. There were
also a lot of machines that would do the hardwork for people such as water wheels to drive machines for
sawing, hammering, blowing and etc.
