Teach vocabulary - adjectives to Kids:

The use of adjectives is more common than one might think. To children in
kindergarten or the initial years of primary school, recognizing and knowing adjective is
used as a base to know yourself, recognizing which are your own characteristics and
how others see you.

In order to work on adjectives with younger children we must first create an activity or
dynamic that helps us motivate them. We can begin with a second that helps them
move their bodies in order for then move on to another activity where they describe
certain characteristics or adjectives related to people.

In order to get children’s attention it is key to work with specific material that will help
keep children focused on what they will be working on, as well as working with visual
material; the use of flash cards is very helpful in this case.

The activity will basically consist of presenting through flash cards some adjectives that
physically describe some people. After that, in a large paper, each child should draw
themselves with some physical characteristics that were presented (adjective) such as
tall, short, small, among others.

Teach vocabulary - adjectives to teenagers:

Adjectives are always going to be an important part of the student's language


development, enriching the vocabulary, and providing key words to further express
their ideas. In teenager's age, students need to improve and expand this aspect of their
vocabulary.

In order to achieve this, a great activity could be role-playing a dialogue of a specific


topic. This activity is related to The Communicative Approach Methodology, we are
presenting a situation in which students can apply the previous knowledge of the
language and at the same time incorporate the new vocabulary that has been given to
them.

To introduce the activity, teachers will be presenting the new adjectives and their
meanings to the class, then we will be given different situations in which these
adjectives can be used, for example, to talk about the weather, to congratulate
someone, to make an invitation to the theater, etc. Students will be divided in pairs, and
the teacher will give them a situation, now, they will have to create a dialogue
implementing the adjectives. In this part, while creating a dialogue, in addition, students
will be learning through the Task-based Learning Methodology, mixing two methods in
one task.

In the presentation, they are going to role-play their specific situation, portraying their
characters right and of course using the vocabulary. This activity is especially useful for
teenagers, in a way that they will start practicing for real opportunities to use the
language, and in a fun and creative form, and also in a comfortable and familiar
environment for them.

Teaching vocabulary - adjectives to adults:

Every lesson needs to start in a way that arouses students’ interest so that they can
become interested and engaged in the class and what is being taught and that is no
exception for adult learners. Conversely, adults have a wider experience as learners
and they often have a clear understanding of why they are learning things, and can
sustain their motivation. Nevertheless, it is important to always make an engaging
lesson, that can catch students’ attention. For this reason, we will be explaining how to
engage adult students, specifically when teaching them about adjectives.

Adjectives describe and modify the nouns they come before or after and we can
classify adjectives as vocabulary or in more general terms as lexis. Likewise, the
adjectives you choose will depend on your class. Younger students should learn basic
words, but adults will need to go further. If your adult class is specific to a job, for
example if you are teaching a group of workers from a bakery, you will want to tailor
your list to them. A good way for presenting vocabulary to adult students would be to
offer some, cues, pictures or information about the target item.

For example, during the class you will work on a reading or listening task that includes
some adjectives that are unfamiliar to the students, because of this the teacher might
start the class by telling a short story, it could be a personal anecdote, that includes the
adjectives which you will be working with. But as the students do not know the meaning
of some of the words, the teacher can tell the story while miming or showing images to
illustrate the meaning, asking comprehension questions and concepts as words come
up in the story, explaining the meaning as they go or pretending to forget the words as
they tell the story so they can elicit the words from the students.
