Course Analytical and exact methods can provide solutions for a limited class of problems. Practical
Overview real life problems often require computational solutions of complicated mathematical problems
for arbitrarily shaped geometries and complicated material properties. Computers and numerical
methods provide an alternative for such complicated problems. This course will give an introduction
to numerical analysis for modeling various scientific problems. The advantages and drawbacks
of various computational techniques will be provided. Students will gain hands-on experience
for numerical solutions by developing simple computer codes.

Course
Content • Introduction to Numerical Methods

• Approximation and Round-off Errors

• Truncation Errors and the Taylor Series
• Roots of (Non-linear) Equations
• Linear Algebraic Equations

• Curve Fitting and Interpolation

• Numerical Differentiation and Integration
• Ordinary Differential Equations

Grading The course work for this class has two main components:
Policy
1. Homework (20%)
2. Project(s) (50%)
3. Midterm/Final exam (30%)

4. Quiz (10% - bonus)

• One make-up examination, covering the whole course material, will be given after the final
exam date for the students who missed a midterm and/or final examination due to a valid
excuse approved by the department. Examination will be closed book and notes.
• Homework will be distributed via SUCourse and are due at the beginning of class. Zero credit
for late homework unless arrangements are made in advance. You can discuss the problems
with your classmates but copying work is against University regulations.
• All solutions (homework, projects, and exam) must be written in a professional manner. You
may lose points for poorly written answers.

Disclaimer
• The instructor reserves the right, when necessary, to alter the grading policy, change examination
dates, and modify the syllabus and course content. Any modification will be announced at
SUCourse and also during the class. Students are responsible from following the announcements.
• Students who are registered to the course with time-conflict override accept the responsibility
of any inconvenience that might occur due to missed content and/or quiz.
