Enter your data in the green boxes and the answer will appear in the yellow box.
NB Max engine RPM should not be more than 85% of manufacturers stated max RPM unless a continuous-duty heavy marine diesel is used!
NB This excludes power required by ancilliaries driven by the engine, such as hydraulic pumps or generators.
NB Each extra gearbox or vee-drive will reduce power by an additional 3%.
This will calculate the Displacement Speed Formula for the hull.
Speed:Length Ratio up to 1.6=displacement, from 1.6 to 2.8=semi-displacement, over 2.8=planing.
572,973 Maximum Displacement of vessel in pounds. 259.90 Maximum Displacement of vessel in ton.
69 Waterline Length of vessel in feet. 21.000 Waterline Length of vessel in meter.
10 Required maximum speed in knots.
213 Shaft Horsepower available at propeller from "Torque & Shaft Horsepower" sheet
2686 Pounds per Shaft Horsepower available (power/weight ratio)
For planing hulls, where C= 150 for runabout, 190 for fast, 210 for race.
2.9 Approx maximum speed attainable with motor data from "Torque & Shaft HP" sheet.
2547 Shaft HP required for speed required at top of page.
10 Speed in knots required from Power Req page
1154 Max prop shaft rpm from Torque & SHP page
923 80% of max prop shaft rpm
1.10 desired speed divided by max prop shaft rpm to give prop feet per minute.
0.33 mean-width ratio blades. (This means 33% of the "disc" area of prop dia is blades)
Rules of thumb.
One inch diameter = 2.5 inches of pitch.
Two inches extra pitch will cut engine rpm by 450.
If you can't fit the indicated diameter due to clearance, or have plenty room left, the rules
of thumb above will be a useful guide.
The alternatives in light blue squares
If you find yourself way off, you have either entered bad data or have a badly configured vessel!
Two blade propeller.
3915 Maximum Static or Bollard thrust in pounds. 1.777448804 Maximum Static or Bollard thrust in ton.
It should be noted that it is physically impossible to do an exact calculation, simply because there are so
many variables, such as water salinity or temperature, all of which affect the equations.
It will even be found that two identical vessels will perform slightly differently if their apparently identical
propellers are swapped.
Even an apparently precise specification will leave room for significant variations from one manufacturer
to the next. So there is no such animal as a pair of perfectly matched props…
The purpose of this spreadsheet is to take the guesswork out and produce a spec that is as close as
is practical to the approximate theoretical ideal.
Have fun calculating the numbers for installation of your engine in a 10,000 ton coaster!
