LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 7

Quarter 4: Solving Problems Involving Side and Angle of a Polygon

Competency: The learner solves problems involving sides and angles of a polygon. (M7GE-IIIj-1)

In this lesson, you will learn how to solve problems involving side and angle of a polygon.

What’s In
Recall that a polygon is a closed figure Solution:
made up of three or more line-segments joined at A. Pentagon with sides 5cm
their endpoints. When all sides and all angles of a P = s1 + s2 + s3 + s4 + s5
polygons are congruent, the polygon is a regular P = 5 cm + 5 cm + 5 cm + 5 cm + 5 cm
polygon or regular n-gon. P = 25 cm
B. Equilateral triangle with sides 7cm
Illustrative examples: P = s1 + s2 + s3
P = 7 cm + 7 cm + 7 cm
Find the perimeter of each polygon.
P = 21 cm
A. Pentagon with a sides 5cm C. Square with sides 26mm
B. Equilateral triangle with sides 7cm P = s1 + s2 + s3 + s4
C. Square with sides 26mm P = 26 mm + 26 mm + 26 mm + 26 mm
P = 104 mm
What’s New
To help you
understand problems
involving sides and angles of
a polygon, recall that the
sum of the measures of the
interior angles of a triangle is
180°. Now, try to determine
inductively the sum of the
measures of the interior
angles of any polygon by
doing the following activity.

Activity 1:
1. Draw convex polygons
with four, five, six, seven and
eight sides.

2. Divide each polygon into

triangles by drawing
diagonals from one of its
vertices.

3. Find the sum of the

measures of the interior
angles of each polygon by
multiplying the number of
triangles formed by 180°.

4. Record all the resulting

values in a separate sheet of
paper using a table similar to
table 1.1. The first one has
been done for you.

Page 1
Questions: What did you
discover? What is the sum of
the measures of the interior
angles of a polygon with 10
sides? of an n-gon?

What is It
The sum of the measures of the interior angles of an n-gon is, S = (n – 2 )180°, where n is the
number of sides. The sum of the measures of the exterior angles of any polygon is equal to 360°. The
(𝒏−𝟐)𝟏𝟖𝟎°
measure of each angle of a regular polygon with n sides is .
𝒏
Example 1. Find the sum of the measures of the vertex angles for pentadecagon.
Solution: Pentadecagon is a 15-sided polygon
S = (n – 2)180°
S = (15 – 2) 180°
S = (13) 180°
S = 2,340°
Therefore, the sum of the measures of the angles of a pentadecagon is 2,340°.

Example 2. Find the number of sides of a regular polygon when the measure of an exterior angle is
45°.
Solution: Recall that each exterior angle of a regular polygon measures 3600/n. Since each exterior angle
measures 450, hence,
45° = 360°/n
45°n = 360°
n = 360°/45°
n=8
Therefore, the polygon has 8 sides.

What I Have Learned

Activity 2: Match the correct answer in column B. Write only the letter of your answer in the
space provided.
Column A Column B
_____1. Find the sum of the measures of the vertex angles for octagon. a. 900°
b. 9
_____2. Find the sum of the measures of the vertex angles for hexagon c. 1,080°
d. 13
_____3. Find the sum of the measures of the vertex angles for heptagon e. 720°
f. 1,260°
_____4. Find the number of sides of the regular polygon when the sum of
the measures of the vertex angle is 1,260°
_____5. Find the number of sides of the regular polygon when the sum of
the measures of the vertex angle is 1,980°

Good job! Now you’re up for the next challenge of this lesson.

What I Can Do
