Announcement

For those who missed

Quiz #1, Quiz #2, or Long Test #1:
Make Up Quiz/Long Test will be on
February 14, Wednesday.
Venue: TBA
Objectives
Define geometric sequences and series

Derive the formula for the nth term of a

geometric sequence

Find the missing term(s) in a geometric sequence

Find the partial sum of a geometric
sequence

Solve word problems involving geometric

sequences & series
Part 1

Recall
What is a geometric sequence*?
A sequence is geometric if each term (after the first
term) is obtained by multiplying the previous term by a
constant value called the common ratio, r.

To solve for the common ratio, we use the formula:

𝑎! nth term
𝑟=
𝑎!"# previous term

*Geometric sequence is also called as geometric progression.

Formula: nth term of a Geometric Sequence

To find the nth term in a geometric sequence, we

use the formula,
Observe that
𝒏#𝟏
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 # 𝒓 the exponent
of the
common ratio
where: is just the
difference
𝒂𝟏 is the first term. between the
term numbers
𝒓 is the common ratio. n and 1.
𝒏 is the term number.
What is a geometric series?
A geometric series is the sum of the terms in a
geometric sequence.

v Geometric sequence is written as:

𝒂𝟏 , 𝒂𝟐 , 𝒂𝟑 , 𝒂𝟒 , … , 𝒂𝒏
v Geometric series is written as:
𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝟐 + 𝒂𝟑 + 𝒂𝟒 + … + 𝒂𝒏
Formula: Finite Geometric Series

For finite* geometric series, we can use these formulas:

v when an is known: where: 𝑟 ≠ 1
𝒂𝟏 − 𝒂𝒏 𝒓
𝑺𝒏 = 𝑺𝒏 is the sum of the first n terms.
𝟏−𝒓 𝒂𝟏 is the first term.
v when an is unknown: 𝒂𝒏 is the nth term.
𝒂𝟏 (𝟏 − 𝒓𝒏 ) 𝒓 is the common ratio.
𝑺𝒏 = 𝒏 is the number of terms.
𝟏−𝒓
*To emphasize, these formulas are for finite geometric series.
A different formula is used for infinite geometric series (not under the scope of our lesson).
Part 2

Practice Exercises
Mechanics
v The class will be divided into groups of 4 members.
v Each group will only have 1 official
tablet/whiteboard/paper.
v A problem will be given and must be answered within the
given time. After the set time, each group will raise their
tablet/whiteboard/paper with their answer written on it.
v Every correct answer is worth 2 points while an incorrect
answer is worth 1 point.
v The total points of the group will be credited as recitation
points of the members for the day.
Exercise
Determine whether each sequence is geometric or not.
If it is geometric, find the common ratio.

1) 5, –5, 5, –5, … 𝑟 = −1

The partial sum of the geometric series is 7812.

Exercise
14) What is the first term of the geometric sequence if
the sum of the first seven terms is –75,371 and the
common ratio is –4?

16) The first term of a geometric sequence is –3. Each
term is doubled to determine the next term. If the
sum of the first n terms of this sequence is –189,
how many terms were added?

Six terms were added.

Exercise
17) If you save ₱5 in January and you double your
savings every month, how much will you have at the
end of the year?

You will have ₱20,475 at the end of the year.

Exercise
18) Suppose that the magnification of a PDF file on a
desktop computer is increased by 15% for each level of
zoom. If the original length of the word “February” is 1.2
cm, what is the length of the word after 6
magnifications? Round off the final answer to 2 decimal
places.
