and Lamb) consumed by a European country during the 25 years 1979-2004. Units are
measured in grams per person per week (gpppw).
From an overall perspective, one of the most outstanding features is that there was a
significant growth in the consumption of Chicken across the whole period 1979-2004, whereas
the corresponding figures given for Beef, Lamb and Fish decreased at the same time
(OVERVIEW-TRENDS). By the year 1979, the figure recorded for Beef appeared to be by far
the largest one among the four chosen food types, with approximately 220 gpppw which was
followed by the similar level of both Chicken and Lamb, with almost 150 gpppw. Nevertheless,
Fish seemed to be a kind of food having the lowest figure, with around 60 gpppw in 1979.
It is interesting to note that Chicken’s consumption increased dramatically between 1979 and
2004, reaching the highest level of about 250 gpppw by the year 2004 – a huge growth of
almost 1.5 times (S+V, V-ing). Conversely, the figure observed for Fish was consistently
determined to be the lowest one throughout the 25 years 1979-2004, decreasing steadily from 60
gpppw to roughly 45 gpppw (S+V, V-ing).
Remarkably/Surprisingly, Beef’s consumption declined substantially throughout the whole
period 1979-2004, from almost 220 gpppw to nearly 110 gpppw – a two-fold decrease. In the
similar trend/ At the same trend, the figure given for Lamb dropped considerably between 1979
and 2004, from about 150 gpppw to roughly 60 gpppw. By the final year 2004, Chicken’s figure
was found to be the highest one among the four different kinds of food.
