The world is moving toward the Fourth Industrial Evolution, the era of technology, and the

demand for workforce in tech fields is higher than ever. This leads to more and more people
choose to pursue their career in Applied Science, in which Computer Science and Computer
Engineering are of the most popular degrees. However, some people might have a difficult time
differentiating said two majors due to their similarities. There are three main differences between
the two majors: the originality, the courses being taught in each field and the purpose.

Computer Science is often considered as a branch of Mathematics, therefore Computer Scientists

study a variety of math courses such as Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra.
Computer Engineer, on the other hand, being a branch of Electrical Engineering makes it mostly
about Physics, hardware development, the study of microchips, processors. The major difference
between Computer Science and Computer Engineering is that while one mostly works with
algorithms, which take care of the software of a computer, the other will mainly focus on the
hardware part. Computer Science students will learn about different programming languages,
algorithms, data structure, and security. They will also learn about building applications and
websites, computational and mathematical theories to develop software systems for smart
devices. On the other hand, Engineering students will study hardware systems, robotics,
electrical engineering, etc. Computer engineers make sure software runs smoothly on their
design, they study ways to put components together to make a whole complete device at “both
microscopic level and the integrated systems level”, according to Dr. Ray Klump. Even though
the line between the two fields might be a bit blurry sometimes due to their characteristic of
creating and solving, their originalities are, in fact, quite different from each other. Computer
Science can be simply differentiated from Computer Engineer by its purpose, Computer Science
is designing software, (including creates operating systems so that the devices can run smoothly,
install other applications, etc.) while the latter is responsible for putting parts like microchips,
screen, and memory storage together so that the software can be paired with it. To sum it up,
when consider the difference between Computer Science and Computer Engineering, “software”
and “hardware” are the two keywords to differentiate them.

Despite having different disciplines from each other, a Computer Scientist and a Computer
Engineer both need the same set of skills to succeed in either area. As established above,
problem-solving and solution-creating is a key feature of both fields, this leads to other crucial
skills required for those who decide to pursue these two paths. First and foremost, critical
thinking skill and creativity are extremely important as it is the “base” for both scientists and
engineers to develop themselves further in their careers. Computer Science and Engineering
students should always raise questions and think differently to come up with better solutions, to
make their products work faster, more efficient, and be able to perform many more tasks. Since
logic and analytical thinking are both crucial skills, there are some common courses that the two
majors share. Moreover, basic programming and technical knowledge are also fundamental to be
able to pursue this kind of career, Computer Science and Engineering students often learn the
same programming languages, the basics of both software and hardware systems, data, and
security.

With the rapid development of technology, it is essential to tell the differences between
Computer Science and Engineering so that one can decide which path is right for them. Not only
that, knowing the similarities of both fields also helps us understand how each field has its own
mission: Computer Science mostly due with software problems while Computer Engineering
works with hardware, physical devices, but also plays an important role in supporting the other.
