Ma2002 Tut - 1

This document covers tutorial material on mechanisms and kinematics including identifying types of links and joints, sketching kinematic diagrams, and determining degrees of freedom for various mechanisms. Example mechanisms covered include an exercise machine, camera folding mechanism, oil field pump, and aircraft overhead bin.

TUTORIAL 1

MA2002 Theory of Mechanism

MP2002 Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery

Note that this Tutorial will be covered over a two-week period.

1.1 Identify the types of links and joints of the mechanism as shown below and determine its
degrees of freedom.

1.2 Sketch the kinematic disgrams of the planar mechanisms and find the mobility.
1.3 The figure below shows the line drawing of a commercially available exercise machine.

(a) Exaplain why the machine can be treated as a planar mechainsm when performing
motion analysis.
(b) Sketch the kinematic diagram of the machine and determine its degrees of freedom.
(c) If the pin joint at B is moved to the alternate connection B’, will this make the workout
harder or easier ?

1.4 The Figure below shows the folding mechanism of a camera in its opened position.

Frame

Sketch the kinematic diagram of the folding mechanism and determine its degrees of
freedom.
1.5 Find the degrees of freedom of the oil field pump and the aircraft overhead bin mechanisms
as shown. Identify the type of linkages using Grashof condition. (all dimensions are in mm)

1.6 (Wilson & Sadler, Q1.18 & 1.20, p.91)

For the following two cases :

(a) L0 = 4, L1 = 1, L2 = 2, L3 = 1.5
(b) L0 = 2.5, L1 = 1, L2 = 2.5, L3 = 2

(i) determine whether the links can actually form a mechanism with the dimensions given;

(ii) if a mechanism exists, identify the type of mechanism (crank rocker, drag link, double-
rocker, triple-rocker, change-point).

1.7 (Wilson & Sadler, Q1.24, p.91)

Given L1 = 100 mm, L2 = 280 mm and L3 = 360 mm, find the range of values for the
unknown link L0 if the linkage will theoretically act as a :

(a) crank rocker mechanism; (b) drag link mechanism; (c) double-rocker mechanism;

(d) change-point mechanism; (e) Grashof mechanism; (f) triple-rocker mechanism.
