AGREEING and DISAGREEING

1. Agreeing:
o I tend to agree with you.
o That's a good idea.
o I'm with you on that point.
o I'll go along with that.
o Absolutely! I agree with your point.
o I totally agree with that idea/proposal.
o I hold exactly the same view.
o I couldn't agree more.
o You're dead right.
o That's absolutely true.
o That's just what I was thinking.
o That's spot on.
o That's exactly my position.
o You've hit the nail on the head!
o That's how I see it too / how I feel too.
2. Disagreeing:
o I see things differently.
o I tend to disagree with that idea.
o I agree up to a point. However ...
o You have a point there, but ...
o Sorry, but I think you've missed the point.
o You could be right. However ...
o The idea is worth considering, but ...
o Perhaps a weakness of this is that ...
o Well, I'm not sure of that because ...
o That might be acceptable if ...
o I'm afraid I don't agree / I disagree.
o I strongly / totally disapprove of the plan.
o I'm absolutely against the proposal.

The following expressions are a great way to give your discussion a bit of
structure. At first, it might
seem a bit unnatural but after a while these expressions will become
implicit.

STARTING THE CONVERSATION (Start strongly!)

• Shall I start?
• I’ll start
• Let’s talk about … first.

GIVING YOUR OPINION

• I think that…
• In my opinion …
• In my view …
• I reckon …
• If you ask me…
• As far as I am concerned…

AGREEING

• That’s what I think, too.


• I totally agree …
• That’s a good point.
• You are absolutely right.
• I’ll go along with that.
• Absolutely.
HALF-AGREEING

• I’m not so sure about that.


• I sort of agree.
• I take your point, but …
• I see what you mean, but …
• I see where you are coming from but…

TAKING TIME TO THINK

• Let me see.
• It depends …
• Give me a second to think about that
• That’s an interesting question.
• That’s a tricky question, really.
• Well, it’s difficult to say, really.

DISAGREEING

• I completely disagree.
• No, you are missing the point.
• Sorry but I don’t agree
• I don’t think so
• I can’t see your point at all.

ASKING FOR CLARIFICATION

• So what you are saying is….


• You mean …
• I don’t really see what you are getting at
• I don’t quite follow you

PROPOSING / SUGGESTING

• Let’s go to (the cinema).


• Why don’t we go to (the art gallery).
• Shall we go and see (this photography exhibition).?
• How about going to (the zoo).?
• Do you fancy going to see (this photography exhibition)?
• How does that sound?
• Well, I’m quite keen on going to (the park)
REACTING with interest

(You could also use expressions from ‘agreeing’ above)


• Great!
• What a great/brilliant/fantastic idea!
• How interesting!
• What a pity!
• Wow!
• Cool!

REACTING with disinterest

• I don’t find (museums) very interesting.


• I am not really into (modern art).
• (Cinemas) aren’t really my cup of tea.
• (Modern art) isn’t really my thing.
• I am not a big fan of (modern art).

CLOSING A DISCUSSION & SUMMING UP

• I think we need to make a decision.


• Shall we try to come to an agreement?
• Let’s go with…
• Let’s choose…
• Ok, so let’s choose…
