Energy Transfer
Mechanisms
q Conduction
The transfer of thermal energy between neighboring molecules in a substance due to a
temperature gradient. Heat conduction in fluids can be thought of as molecular energy
transport. The Basic mechanism is the motion of the constituent molecules.

q Convection
Convection is the transfer of heat energy by the bulk motion of a fluid. As fluid motion goes
more quickly the convective heat transfer increases. It is depend on the density of the fluid

q Radiation
Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through empty space. No medium is necessary for
radiation to occur; radiation works even in and through a perfect vacuum. The energy from
the Sun travels through the vacuum of space before warming the earth.

Example
Estimate thermal conductivity of ethane at 153 F (340K) and 191.9 atm based on experimental value
k = 0.0159 Btu/hr.ft.F at 1 atm and 153 F
Solution:
q Critical point, Tc = 305.4K and Pc = 48.2 atm

Existing condition : Tr =(340/305.4) = 1.115

Pr=(191.9/48.2) = 3.98
k
Based on Fig. 9.2-1. Kr = 2.07 ® kr = ® k = k r .kc , kc ..... ??

q Kc can be calculated based on experimental data

Experimental condition : Tr =(340/305.4) = 1.115

Pr=(1/48.2) = 0.021
k k 0.0159
Based on Fig. 9.2-1. Kr = 0.36 ® kr = ® kc = = = 0.042
kc kr 0.36
q And then k (153 F, 191.9 atm) = 2.07 x 0.0422 = 0.0914 Btu/hr.ft.F

Thermal Conductivity of Gases at Low Density
q Use the Chapman-Enskog formula:

In the second form of this equations k[=] cal/cm.s.K, T[=]K, σ [=] A, and the “collision
integral for thermal conductivity, Ωk is identical to viscosity, Ωµ
Combining this equation with pure monatomic viscosity prediction
