Guide Question:
As what we see, water is a polar molecule and oil is non-polar molecule. So, the set-ups 1,
3 and 5 mixed well or these 3 set-ups are miscible and the set-ups 2, 4 and 6 did not mixed well
or these 3 set-ups are immiscible.
The experiment shows us how polar and non-polar molecules behave when added
together. If two polar molecules are added together they will mixed well or miscible same goes
with the 2 nonpolar molecules but in non-polar it depends on its ratio if they will be miscible or
immiscible. However, if you mixed polar and non-polar molecules the result will be 100%
immiscible or the activity/experiment did not mixed well.
Calculate the electronegativity difference and give the type of bond that exists between the atoms in each of
the following pairs.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Tell whether the compound below is an ionic compound (IC) or covalent compound (CC) based on the type of
chemical bond present.
IC 1. NaCl CC 6. N₂O
CC 2. CO₂ CC 7. PCI5
IC 3. CaCl₂ IC 8.KBr
CC 4. CCL4 CC 9. HCI
IC 5. Fe₂O₃ IC 10.AICI3
Polar covalent bonds result when electrons are unequally shared between atoms, while
nonpolar covalent bonds result when electrons are more equally shared between atoms. The
unequal sharing of electrons is due to the differences in the electronegativities of the two atoms
sharing the electrons.
2. What is electronegativity and how can it be used in in determining the polarity of molecules?
3. Is it possible for a molecule to have a polar bond but have an overall polarity of nonpolar?
It is possible for a molecule to have polar bonds, but be a non-polar molecule. This occurs
when the three-dimensional shape of the molecule is symmetric.
Bonding electron pairs occur in a covalent bond between two atoms. they include one
electron from each atom in the covalent bond. Non-bonding pairs do not take part in bonding.
they are the left over electrons in the outer shell of the atom.
