Moving Forward, “K.O.D” is a visual balance of vibrant colors that are strategically
placed to convey the mood and elements of the album. The first main aspect of J. Cole’s album
cover is the vibrant color palette that’s used boldly to present the album's mood and thematic
elements. The art presents dominant shades of red, blue, purple, and yellow that captivate a
viewer's attention. This results in the contrast between the colors creating the stage for a vivified
experience that stimulates viewers. A quadratic color scheme is used to add a compatible balance

to the composition of the pallet that’s used. Red, being the dominant color in the cover art evokes
major emotions such as intensity and danger. It portrays the album's sense of urgency and
seriousness of the message of the album. The scatter within red divisions are strews of blue that
create a prominent contrast of sensitivity with open spaces and melancholy. The strategic use of
blue presents a duality of conflicting emotions and experiences encountered in the album.
Although purple is simple and is only often associated with royalty and luxury, the color is used
in this art cover as a pillar to the exploration of self-worth and expectations. The deep purples
can symbolize a self-hierarchy that allows a higher understanding that rises above the chaos
below. Directly above purple, a streak of yellow is presented. Yellow optimism acts as a streak of
positivity in the middle of darkness and a visual focal point. The inclusion of yellow can
symbolize resilience and aspiration in the battle with dark themes that are presented the in album.
album cover as it’s what predominantly attracts a viewer's attention. The central figure and focus
of the art is a narrative larger-than-life J. Cole neighboring many symbolic elements. The use of
symmetry in the art along with balances of chaos and order engages with viewers to pressurize
them into the exploration of the details that are written in. The Artist places children engaging
with drugs under the coat of the album's narrative to create a visual contrast between innocence
and harsh realities that are encountered in the album's theme. The ominous figures that are placed
above the children give the sense of a lurking danger. These figures are positioned in a way that
they symbolize societal demons and the dark human psyche that shadow aspects of a human's
experience. Strategically placing the characters above the children reinforces the idea of
concealment and unauthentic attention to the allure of drug cultures. J Cole provides a visual

language with character placements that convey a story of struggles in society, personal battles,
the artwork within itself. Analyzing the background of the cover art is equally important as
analyzing the color pallet and placement of characters. As previously mentioned, the collage is
rich in dominant reds and conflicting blues which creates a backdrop that sharpens the mood and
composition of the art. The chaotically organized background surfaces the complex messages
within “KOD” and its themes presented throughout the album. As shown in the art, the backdrop
also serves as a metaphoric view of the miscellaneous challenges that are inherited from societal
issues and constructs – authenticity and deception, hope and despair, innocence and corruption.
Due to the color palette and complex details that were provided, the background becomes an
integral part of the visual analysis. The splashes of contradicting colors contribute to the
storytelling of J. Cole's thought process and symbolic imagery. This causes the foreground and
background to create a visual dialogue that enhances the impact of J. Cole’s depth in his artistic
expression.
attention and provides many questions about the themes and messages of the album. Through the
combination of his color palette, placement of characters, and background, the cover serves as a
testament to J. Cole's ability to combine his artistic expression with his visual and social
commentary. After analyzing the cover art, there's a possibility that viewers could gain the ability
to confront their inner demons and society as a whole…the KOD album cover makes the album a
