Enabling and Inhibiting

Dimensions of
Technology

Prepared by: Jason Navidad

At the end of the module, you are expected
to:
1. Appreciate the different uses of technology and its issues;
2. Identify technologies that are important in human lives; and
3. Categorize the value of technology in today’s modern world and
address issues in a positive way.
21st Century learning
• Twenty-first century learning is characterized by the application and
advancement of information technology (IT).
• Information technology has become essential in education, encompassing the
study, design, development, application, and management of computer-based
information systems.
POTENTIAL ISSUES TO LOOK OUT FOR
WHEN BRINGING TECHNOLOGY
IN EDUCATION
Students Using Social Media:
• Concerns arise about students spending more time on social media
than on educational tasks when provided with technology devices.
• Access to social networking sites like Facebook, mobile games,
etc., can distract students from their studies.
Cheating:
• Technology facilitates new forms of cheating, such as accessing
digital "cheat sheets" on devices during exams.
Gaming:
• Free gaming apps can be addictive and distracting for learners,
reducing productivity and engagement in learning activities.
Unintended Consequences of Technology:
• Tech innovations, while aiming to improve life, can lead to unintended
consequences such as loneliness from excessive social media use and
distractions from screen time.
• Technology companies, while aiming to innovate and serve consumers, also
prioritize profit-making.
Impact of Technology on Education:
• Technology accelerates learning by creating efficient environments and
providing opportunities for meaningful engagement.
• Integration of technology in education transforms teaching roles and
enhances learning experiences for students.
• Technology also benefits individuals with disabilities, enabling learning and
empowerment beyond entertainment.
Identifying Dimensions of
Technology
Enabling and Inhibiting Dimensions
Enabling Dimensions:
1. Connectivity: Technology enables people to connect globally in real-
time through various platforms like social media, video conferencing,
and messaging apps.
2. Efficiency: Automation and digital tools streamline processes,
increasing productivity and reducing manual labor.
3. Innovation: Technology fosters innovation through research and
development, leading to new products, services, and solutions.
4. Access to Information: The internet provides easy access to vast
amounts of information, empowering individuals with knowledge and
resources.
5. Globalization: Technology breaks down geographical barriers,
allowing businesses and individuals to operate on a global scale.
Inhibiting Dimensions:
1. Digital Divide: Disparities in access to technology and digital skills
create inequality, limiting opportunities for some populations.
2. Privacy Concerns: The proliferation of technology raises concerns
about data privacy and security, leading to potential breaches and
misuse of personal information.
3. Dependency: Over-reliance on technology can lead to reduced human
interaction, decreased critical thinking, and a loss of traditional skills.
4. Job Displacement: Automation and artificial intelligence threaten
certain job sectors, leading to unemployment and economic instability
for some workers.
5. Ethical Dilemmas: Advancements in technology bring ethical
challenges such as algorithmic bias, surveillance, and the ethical use of
emerging technologies like AI and genetic engineering.
