GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS
TERM 2
FORMAL ASSESSMENT TASK INVESTIGATION:
FUNCTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS

Memorandum

1
ACTIVITY 1
1. Jessy records the number of cars and car wheels he sees in his street.

His recording is as follows:

1 car has 4 wheels.
2 cars will have 8 wheels.
3 cars will have 12 wheels.
1.1 Jessy records this information in the table below:

Number of cars (𝑥) 1 2 3 4 6

Number of wheels
4 8 12 16✔ 24✔
(𝑦)

1.1.1 Complete the missing values in the table. (2)

1.1.2 Which values represent the input values ?

Number of cars or 1,2,3,4,6✔ (1)

1.1.3 Which values represent the output values ?

Number of wheels or 4,8,12,16,24✔ (1)

1.1.4 What are the two variables that are represented in the table ?
Number of cars (𝑥)✔ and Number of wheels (𝑦) ✔ (2)

1.1.5 Which variable represents the independent variable? Provide a reason for your
answer.
The number of cars. ✔
An independent variable is a variable whose value is not determined by the value of
another variable, in this case, the number of cars do not depend on the number of
wheels ✔ (2)

1.1.6 Which variable represents the dependent variable? Provide a reason for your
answer.
The number of wheels. ✔
A dependent variable is a variable whose value is determined by the value of
another variable, in this case the number of wheels depends on the number of cars
counted. ✔ (2)

1.1.7 Write a verbal statement that relates the number of cars to the number of wheels in
general.
The number of wheels is equal to 4 times the number of cars counted. ✔✔ (2)
1.1.8 Write a number sentence that relates the number of cars to the number of wheels in
general.
2
The statement 𝑦 = 4𝑥 , can be true for any value of 𝑥, provided one chooses the
appropriate value for 𝑦 . The statement is true for certain combinations of values of
𝑥 and 𝑦. (2)

1.2 Thabo is given the following table:

𝑥 1 2 3 4 6

𝑦 15 10 5 0 -10

Thabo states that y = 5𝑥 + 10 is the correct formula for the function illustrated in the table.

1.2.1 Is Thabo correct? Show all the calculations that you have used in determining your
answer.

No, Thabo is not correct. 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡

For the formula y = 5𝑥 + 10 if 𝑥 = 1
y = 5(1) + 10
y = 15

but if 𝑥 = 2
y = 5(2) + 10 𝑀𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑
y = 20 and not 10 as indicated in the table 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

and but if 𝑥 = 3
y = 5(3) + 10
y = 25 and not 5 as indicated in the table

ACTIVITY 2
2.1 Amy is given the following flow diagram.

2.1.1 Explain to Amy how to determine the output values of the flow diagram?

3
To each input number , add 2 and then the result is multiplied by 3 to produce the
output numbers (2)

2.1.2 Amy wants to create a table, using the information from the flow diagram above.
Help Amy by creating the table for her.

Input -2 0 3 9
Output 0 6 15 33

indicates input and output

all correct input values
all correct output values
(3)

2.2 Consider the following flow diagram and then answer the questions that follow.

2.2.1 Represent the relationship shown in the diagram in words.

The input value is multiplied by negative 4 and the result is then added to 3 to obtain the
output value (2)
2.2.2 Use the information provided in the flow diagram to complete the table below.

Input 0 1 2 4 8 n

output 3 -1 - 5 -13 -29 -4n + 3

(5)
2.2.3 Describe, in words, the steps to follow to calculate the input value for the given
output value of − 21.
The output value of -21 is subtracted by 3 and the result is then divided by -4 to obtain the
input value of 6 (3)
