ACTIVITY 1
1. Jessy records the number of cars and car wheels he sees in his street.
1.1.4 What are the two variables that are represented in the table ?
Number of cars (𝑥)✔ and Number of wheels (𝑦) ✔ (2)
1.1.5 Which variable represents the independent variable? Provide a reason for your
answer.
The number of cars. ✔
An independent variable is a variable whose value is not determined by the value of
another variable, in this case, the number of cars do not depend on the number of
wheels ✔ (2)
1.1.6 Which variable represents the dependent variable? Provide a reason for your
answer.
The number of wheels. ✔
A dependent variable is a variable whose value is determined by the value of
another variable, in this case the number of wheels depends on the number of cars
counted. ✔ (2)
1.1.7 Write a verbal statement that relates the number of cars to the number of wheels in
general.
The number of wheels is equal to 4 times the number of cars counted. ✔✔ (2)
1.1.8 Write a number sentence that relates the number of cars to the number of wheels in
general.
2
The statement 𝑦 = 4𝑥 , can be true for any value of 𝑥, provided one chooses the
appropriate value for 𝑦 . The statement is true for certain combinations of values of
𝑥 and 𝑦. (2)
𝑥 1 2 3 4 6
𝑦 15 10 5 0 -10
Thabo states that y = 5𝑥 + 10 is the correct formula for the function illustrated in the table.
1.2.1 Is Thabo correct? Show all the calculations that you have used in determining your
answer.
but if 𝑥 = 2
y = 5(2) + 10 𝑀𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑
y = 20 and not 10 as indicated in the table 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
and but if 𝑥 = 3
y = 5(3) + 10
y = 25 and not 5 as indicated in the table

ACTIVITY 2
2.1 Amy is given the following flow diagram.
2.1.1 Explain to Amy how to determine the output values of the flow diagram?
3
To each input number , add 2 and then the result is multiplied by 3 to produce the
output numbers (2)
2.1.2 Amy wants to create a table, using the information from the flow diagram above.
Help Amy by creating the table for her.
Input -2 0 3 9
Output 0 6 15 33
2.2 Consider the following flow diagram and then answer the questions that follow.
