What I Know

I think you are familiar with the story of an elephant

described by 6 blind men. Each has his own description
according to what he touches. The description appears to be
like that and that is, but from the end of persons having good
eyesight, there may be different description. One reality of
diverse point of view.
Perspective of reality influences organizations to come into
existence. Let us check how far you are able to identify them
based on their advocacies and ideologies.

This module attempts to take various perspectives of understanding of

community engagement from the end of social sciences, institutions, civil
society, and local/grassroots level. It’s then understood that the context by
which community engagement is held so diverse. Nuances its understanding
of community engagement is contiguously in relationship with the agenda
proposed to and services delivered/rendered to. This also seeks the
interrelationship among perspectives to clarify what community engagement
involves, and how it relates to other ideas and practices.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Define the meaning of community engagement from various
perspectives ;
2. Explain the differences and relationship of institution, civil society,
nongovernmental organization, people’s organization and grassroots
movement; and
3. Show partnership between local government unit ( LGU ) and
nongovernmental organization( NGO ).

Here comes a story of Aesop’s Fables: The Blind Man and The Lame Man.
If one is truly engaged in a community as this course demands of it, this is a
must as reading material. Read it with a discerning mind and radicalized
reflection.

Below the Aesop’s Fables are guide questions for you guidance.

The Blind Man and The Lame Man

Aesop’s Fables
Once, a Blind Man was walking along a rough road. He found it very
difficult to walk alone as he could not see the bumps and puddles on the road.

Just then, someone touched the Blind Man’s arms, It was Lame Man.

The Blind Man introduced himself to the Lame Man and said, “Dear friend,
I am facing difficulty walking on the road alone. Will you please guide me and
help me complete my journey?’’

The Lame Man replied sadly, “I would have readily helped you, my friend,
but I am lame and cannot move even an inch without help. How will I guide
you?”

The Lame Man then thought for a moment and said to the Blind Man,
“You seem to be strong and healthy. If you carry me on your shoulders, we
can both complete our journey. I will guide you as I can see and you can carry
me as you have strong legs.”

The Blind Man readily agreed to the solution offered by the Lame Man.

Both men helped each other and completed their journey, safely and with
pleasure.

The story of the elephant with 6 blind men focuses on perspective; each
one has its own way of describe reality while the story of The Blind Man
and The Lame Man reminds us that we need helping hands from others. This
may be called partners, stakeholders, collaborators, cooperators, donors and
