 Background of the study

I. Introduction

High heat, also known as extreme heat, It happens during summer season and
accompanied by high humidity. During these scorching periods, They soaring temperatures and
stifling humidity create a hostile environment that pose significant challenges for individuals. One
of those particularly affected are students, who may find it difficult to adjust and learn effectively
in the classroom. The adverse consequences of high heat extent beyond physical discomfort
during these days.

The physical health of the students gets affects by the abnormal heat cannot be
underestimated. It could be life-threatening condition characterized by a body temperature above
40 Celsius can lead to organ damage or failure.

Furthermore, high heat can have adverse effects on students’ mental and cognitive well-
being. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and humidity can possibly cause sleep disturbances,
irritability, and mood swings. It impairs concentration, memory, and cognitive processing,
hindering students’ ability to retain information and perform academically. Heat-induced fatigue
and discomfort can be led to increased restlessness and decreased motivation, further impeding
the learning process. Such cognitive impairments can have long-lasting effects on students’
academic performance and overall educational outcomes.

Raise awareness to the impact of the high heat index towards students performances,
focus and physical health.
II. Citation of Heat Index

According to Arslan et al.( by a significant association between BMI and lower grades among
physical therapy students.

According to Kaviyarasi et al.(2018) High potential factors like previous academic background,
study habits, family background, and self-motivation significantly impact students’ academic
performance by influencing their learning proficiency and time taken to achieve learning goals.

According to Park et al.(2021)High heat exposure inhibits learning by decreasing the rate of
skill formation in students, impacting academic performance negatively both internationally and within
the United States.

According to Manh Vu et al.(2022) High heat negatively impacts mathematics test

performance in Vietnamese students, with a 1°F increase leading to a 0.006 standard deviation loss,
affecting females and rural students the most.

According to Manilal et al.(2020) High heat can impact students’ ability to learn and function
due to increased classroom temperatures. This study aims to quantify these effects on health, well-
being, and academic performance in South African primary schoolchildren.

According to Goodman et al.(2020) High heat inhibits learning, reducing academic

performance, especially on extreme heat days. School air conditioning mitigates this effect, with a
1°F hotter school year decreasing learning by 1%.

According to Hyndman et al.(2017) High heat index can impair academic performance by
causing discomfort, dehydration, and cognitive impairments in students, impacting their ability to
concentrate and retain information during physical education activities.

According to Siquira et al.(2017) Analysis of air temperature changes on blood pressure and
heart rate and performance of undergraduate students.

High heat index can increase heart rate, reduce cognitive performance, and impact blood
pressure in students. Optimal temperature for improved cognitive performance is around 23.3°C with
specific initial BP and HR values.
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to explore the effects of heat index on Grade 11 Ama Computer Learning
Center (ACLC) STEM/ Science Technology Engineering Mathematics students College of Ormoc,
specifically examining its impact on their academic performance, physical health, overall well-being,
and learning experience.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1) How does exposure to high heat index levels affect the academic performance of Grade 11
ACLC STEM students?

2) What are the physical health implications of prolonged exposure to elevated heat index levels
among Grade 11 ACLC STEM students?

3) How do Grade 11 ACLC STEM students perceive the impact of heat index on their overall
well-being and learning experience?

4) What measures, if any, are currently in place at ACLC to lessen the effects of heat index on
Grade 11 STEM students, and how effective are they?

5) Are there any correlations between specific heat index levels and attendance rates or
academic achievement among Grade 11 ACLC STEM students?
 SIGINIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is entitled “The effects of heat index to Grade 11 ACLC STEM Students” which
aims to benefit the following:

STUDENTS: This study aims to give importance to the students who experience high heat
index affecting their mental and cognitive well-being. It will benefit the students’ academic
performances, focus and physical health.

TEACHERS: This study would guide the teachers on what to do with the students who
experiences high heat index. The teachers would be able to understand the effects of heat index to
grade 11 STEM students.

PARENTS: Like the teachers, the parents too will understand the effects of heat index to their
son/daughter. This study will also help them to understand the importance of raising awareness to
the effects of heat index to their son/daughter.
 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

Scope

This study focuses on the effect of heat index to Grade 11 ACLC STEM students. It
discusses the problems and experiences grade 11 students on heat index level and how
difficult it is for them. The participants of this study are limited to the students of grade 11
ACLC STEM students of Ormoc City were use as a sample.

Delimitation

This study will specifically on grade 11 ACLC students enrolled in STEM course. It will
examine the effect of heat index of grade 11 STEM students, but will not explore
environmental factors. This study will rely only self-reported data from students, which may
introduce biases or limitations in the accuracy of information. This study only for grade 11
STEM students. Each of the respondents are given same questionnaire to answer.
 DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Heat Index: The heat index is a measure of how hot it feels when relative humidity is
factored in with the actual air temperature. It is also known as the “apparent
temperature” or “felt air temperature.”

2. ACLC: ACLC stands for AMA Computer Learning Center. It is an educational institution
that offers various academic programs and courses, including STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education

3. STEM: STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It

represents an interdisciplinary approach to education focused on these four fields,
integrating them into a cohesive curriculum.

4. Well-being: Well-being refers to the overall state of being comfortable, healthy, and
happy, both physically and mentally. It encompasses various aspects of an individual’s
life, including their physical health, emotional state, and social connections

5. Performance: Performance refers to the level of achievement, productivity, or

effectiveness in a particular area. In the context of this study, it specifically relates to the
academic performance of Grade 11 ACLC STEM students.

6. Heat-related illnesses: Heat-related illnesses are medical conditions that can occur due
to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Examples include heat exhaustion and
heatstroke, which can result from inadequate hydration and inability to regulate body
temperature.

7. Physical discomfort: High heat index values can cause physical discomfort, such as
excessive sweating, fatigue, dehydration, and increased heart rate. These factors can
make it challenging for students to concentrate and engage in physical activities.

8. Reduced cognitive function: Heat can negatively affect cognitive function, including
memory, attention span, and problem-solving abilities. High temperatures and
discomfort caused by heat can make it more difficult for students to focus, think clearly,
and retain information.
9. Decreased academic performance: The adverse effects of heat on cognitive function
and physical discomfort can lead to a decline in academic performance. Students may
have difficulty processing information, understanding complex concepts, and performing
tasks that require mental effort.

10. Health and well-being risks: Exposure to high heat index values can pose health risks,
especially for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those who are more
susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are serious
conditions that can result from prolonged exposure to high temperatures and
inadequate hydration.

11. Attendance and participation: Uncomfortable heat conditions may lead to increased
absenteeism as students may experience heat-related illnesses or discomfort that
prevents them from attending classes regularly. Additionally, students may be less
motivated to actively participate in physical activities or outdoor learning experiences
due to the heat.
