Activity 1 - OBE

The document discusses an activity on outcomes-based education and learning outcomes in mathematics teaching. It provides questions about OBE, learning outcomes, how to design effective outcomes, and how assessments align with OBE. It also asks how OBE promotes continuous improvement in education and provides an example of OBE implementation in a math class. Finally, it asks to explain the concept using the PDCA framework.

Activity No. 1
Outcomes-based Education and Learning Outcomes
in Mathematics Teaching

A. Answer each question/item in a clear and organized paragraph(s). Each question is

worth 5 points.

1. What is Outcome-Based Education (OBE)?

- Outcome-Based Education is a learner centered approach to education that
emphasis the idea of what students are expected to know and should be able to do.
The OBE focused on the outcome of the course and students should achieve their
goal by the end of the educational process.
2. How is OBE different from traditional education?
- Traditional education referred to as a content-based education, it focuses on
delivering subject matter and the way students acquire knowledge, Students follow a
curriculum that includes lectures, textbooks, and exam. While OBE shifts from content
delivery to student outcomes. OBE is a learner-centered approach
3. What are learning outcomes?
- Learning outcomes is what students should be able to demonstrate by the end of the
course.
4. How do you design effective learning outcomes?
- Learning outcome is a concise description of what student will learn and how that
learning will be assessed. Learning outcome should be SMART, use active language
and verbs and avoid terms that can be interpreted in many ways.
5. How do assessments align with OBE?
- Since OBE focuses on the product rather than the content, in order to know if
students learned something, we can use or implement performance-based
assessment, portfolios and project-based assessment
6. How does OBE promote continuous improvement in education?
- The outcome-based education encourages regular assessment and feedback, by
analyzing the student performance. As an educator we can identify for improvement.
7. Can you provide an example of OBE implementation in a Mathematics class?
- The assessment should be students will be able to construct objects using geometric
shapes.
8. How does OBE accommodate diverse learning styles?

- OBE allows flexibility on how students achieve learning outcomes. Educators can
provide various resources and activities catering the different learning styles, this will
ensure that it accommodates the diverse learners.
B. Using the Outcome-based Education (OBE) framework consistency with
PDCA(Plan-Do-Check-Act) principle, explain your idea and concept on this.

Instructions:
I. Introduction: State the concept of the topic and give any context or background
that readers would need to connect to the subject personally.
II. Body Paragraphs: The required body paragraphs vary depending on the reflection
assignment. The students might organize this section by their own analysis of the
subject or any particular assignment criteria. Nonetheless, any critical thinking,
analysis, insight, or opinion should be covered in the body paragraphs, along with
any reflection that may be appropriate.
III. Conclusion: The students should discuss any conclusions they reached and any
new information they learned while reflecting. They should mention whether their
viewpoint or perspective actively contributes as a result of their reflection.

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an education approach that focuses on the graduate

attributes or outcomes after completing an academic program (Barr et al., 2006; Mansor et
al., 2008). The P-D-C-A circle then continues until a sufficient level of attainment is met for
all outcomes. First is PLAN: Establish outcomes, designing learning/content and build
assessments. Second is DO: Educators should deliver lecture, tutorial, and lab. Assess the
students by giving exam, test, quiz, report, presentation. Third is CHECK: Analyze
assessment data and propose improvements. Lastly is ACT: By continuously adjusting the
design, delivery and even the assessment.
