1. Scope
This specification covers requirements for shop surface preparation and painting on external surfaces of equipment.
2. Reference Documents
Approved ITP & Approved Drawing
3. Experienced persons with knowledge & well trained in surface preparation and painting shall be employed.
5. Surface Preparation
a. The blast surface shall be rendered dust free by suitable means such as vacuum cleaner, dry air or soft brushes.
b. Blast Surfaces shall be painted the same day and before any visible rusting occurs . The time elapsed between
blast cleaning and commencement of painting shall under no circumstances exceed 4hr., but in any case must
commence before signs of degradation occur.
c. Surface preparation shall be by abrasive blasting. The abrasive shall be non metallic & chloride free also have
good angularity of form, sharp cutting edges and substantially free from half rounds. Blasting medium for CS
shall be chilled iron grit or copper slag.
d. Compressed air used for abrasive blasting and coating shall be demonstrated suitable for use by testing in
accordance with reference documents..
i. Primer and paints shall be sourced from the same manufacturer for the entire coating system.
ii. Materials shall be stored as per manufacturer’s instruction and used in the first in, first out basis.first- in,
first-out basis.
iii. Prior to application, the coatings and primers shall be checked for manufacturer’s name,
product designation, batch number, shelf life and date of manufacture.
iv. Containers if stored more than one month shall be tumbled. Material’s shall not be used or mixed
into a new batch after its recommended pot life has been exceeded.
v. Painting should not be undertaken during fog or mist, when rains are imminent, when the
surface to be painted is wet with condensation or when condensation can occur
during the initial drying period of the paint.
vii. Coatings shall be applied by Air Spray method using an air spray gun.
viii. During application and whilst in the set stage the coatings shall be checked for runs and sags.
Runs and sags if observed shall be brushed out.
ix. The manufacturer recommended curing & drying time shall be allowed between coats of Primer &
Finish.
x. Weld seams, sharp corners and edges shall be stripe coated to ensure integrity of the DFT/WFT.
a. Surface Preparation
i. The blasted surface shall be visually examined for type of surface preparation using pictorial
standards in accordance .
ii. The anchor profile shall be measured using a Testex Press-O-Film at 2 locations selected at
random.
.
b. Coating:
e. Monitor for any fire around the work location and remove any fire deemed to be unsafe.
9. Records
a. A report shall be maintained of stage wise inspection carried out, showing type of surface
preparation, DFT of final coat.
Annexure-1.
This Method Statement covers requirements for shop touch-up and repair of damaged primer and painting of CS
surfaces.
Surface Preparation, coating, inspection and acceptance standard shall be as noted below:
1. Damaged System:
a. Areas where the primer is removed down to the steel surface shall be spot blasted to
Sa 2½ . However small areas shall be power tool cleaned , taking care that the area is
not polished.
b. At least 25mm of the adjacent acceptable coat shall also be feathered.
c. The complete coating system shall be re-applied as required, by spray or by brush.
Brush touch-up shall be restricted to coating small areas only.
d. Inspection & Acceptance Standard shall be same as per approved procedure
followed for the original acceptable coating system areas except that 1 Anchor
profile measurement using Testex Press-O-Film shall be made on an area selected
at random from the touch-up areas blasted on a spool at one time.
2. Damaged Finish-coat: Areas where damage is observed only in the finish coat and the primer shall
be treated and inspected as noted below.
a. Either,
i. Lightly rough using abrasive paper/ cloth in order to remove the remaining
damaged finish coat and to provide a degree of surface ‘key’ to the primer.
ii. At least 25mm of the adjacent acceptable finish coat shall also be feathered.
iii. Re-apply the finish coat as required by spray or by brush. Brush touch-up shall
be restricted to coating small areas only.
b. Or alternatively,
i. Abrade the defective area.
ii. At least 25mm of the adjacent acceptable finish coat shall also be feathered.
iii. Wash down to remove all residual material.
iv. Re-apply the finish coat as required by spray or by brush. Brush touch-up shall
