Background of the Study

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders


(DMS-5) published by the American Psychiatric Association (2022), social anxiety is
defined as marked anxiety or fear of one or more social situations when the person
may be subject to scrutiny by others. Examples include social interactions (such as
conversing with others or meeting new people), being seen (such as while eating or
drinking), and acting in public (such as giving a speech). People who suffer from
social anxiety disorder worry that they may unintentionally say or do something that
will make them look foolish or inept, such as blushing, sweating, shaking, or looking
worried. People with social anxiety disorder will make an effort to stay away from
their most feared circumstances whenever they can. Participating in classroom
activities, asking for help in class, engaging in peer-related activities (like team
sports or going to parties and clubs), taking part in school performances, and
navigating social challenges are just a few examples of situations that socially
anxious kids and teenagers may find challenging (National Collaborating Centre for
Mental Health (UK), 2013).
The symptoms of social anxiety disorder, in contrast to everyday
nervousness, include fear, anxiety, and avoidance which may impair relationships,
daily activities, employment, education, or other activities. Even though it can
occasionally start in younger kids or adults, social anxiety disorder often manifests
itself in the early to mid-teens (Mayo Clinic, 2021). According to the National Institute
of Mental Health (2022), some people may find that this fear prevents them from
going to work, school, or performing daily tasks. Other people might be able to carry
out these tasks, but they do it with a great lot of worry or anxiety. People who suffer
from social anxiety disorder may stress about participating in social situations weeks
in advance. They occasionally find themselves avoiding situations or locations that
make them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. Some people with the disorder
experience anxiety during performances rather than anxiety linked to social
interactions. In situations like giving a speech, competing in sports, or performing on
stage, they experience sensations of anxiousness.
Oral Communication is one of the core subjects Senior High Schools
students, are required to take. In the K to 12 basic education curriculum, the
students are expected to perform various speech as a requirement which include
reading from a manuscript, memorized speech, impromptu speech, and
extemporaneous speech (Department of Education, 2013).
