Lab Report CHM Experiment 6

This laboratory report summarizes an experiment where the molarity and concentration of iron(II) sulfate solution was determined through redox titration with potassium permanganate. The molarity of the FeSO4 solution was calculated to be 2.645 M and the concentration was 401.7 g/L. Redox reactions occurred between MnO4- and Fe2+ in acidic conditions.

INTRODUCTION

Redox reaction is a type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons

between two species. Redox titration on the other hand is based on oxidation-reduction
reaction between oxidizing agent and reducing agent by using the same procedure as acid-
base titration. In order to perform this titration, the shape of corresponding titration curve
must be obtained. The oxidizing agents that are usually used are potassium dichromate
(K2Cr2O7) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) since these oxidizing agents can be used as
an internal indicator themselves in redox titration. This is because they have distinctly
different colours in the oxidized and reduced forms.

MnO4- Mn2+
Light purple Pink

Cr2O72- Cr3+
Yellow-orange Green

In this experiment, KMnO4 solution of known concentration will react with an

acidified solution of FeSO4 of unknown concentration. Redox reaction will happen through
this experiment and convert Fe2+ to Fe3+ and MnO4- to Mn2+.
OBJECTIVE

To determine the molarity and concentration of iron (II) sulphate (FeSO4) using redox
titration.
DISCUSSION

From this experiment, the molarity and concentration of iron (II) sulphate (FeSO4)
were obtained by using redox titration. The molarity of the FeSO4 solution is 2.645 M while
the concentration is 401.7 g/L. The mixture of the solution between KMnO4 with FeSO4
produces a colour change from light purple to pink.
Apart from that, there are also some aspects that need to be emphasized when
conducting this experiment. First, the colour of KMnO4 solution make it difficult to read the
burette which can lead to error and mistakes. Therefore, it is important to make sure that our
eyes are perpendicular with the scale of the burette. Not only that, a careful steps also need to
be taken when handling KMnO4 to avoid spill especially onto our body since it can cause
irritation to the skin. Lastly, this experiment needs to be done with patience because we need
to focus when doing titration to get the best results.
CALCULATIONS

1. In this experiment, MnO4- is reduced to Mn2+ and Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+. The reaction
happened in the acidic solution. With the help of ion-electron method, balance the redox
equation.
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- Mn2+ + 4H2O
Fe2+ Fe3+ + e- ( x5)

MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- Mn2+ + 4H2O

5Fe2+ 5Fe3+ + 5e-

5Fe2+ + MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- 5Fe3+ + 5e- + Mn2+ + 4H2O

5Fe2+ + MnO4- + 8H+ 5Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O

2. Determine the molarity (M) of FeSO4 solution.

Mol = mass of solute / molar mass

= 8.034 g / 151.9
= 0.0529 g/mol
Molarity = moles of solute / volume
= 0.0529 g/mol / 0.02 L
= 2.645 M

3. Calculate the concentration in g/L of FeSO4 solution.

M = m/v
= 8.034 g / 0.02 L
= 401.7 g/L
