HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT – II
Due @ 23:59 27.04.2024

Q1. Consider the non-standard second-order system described by the transfer function
( )
𝐺(𝑠) = .
a. Calculate the peak time and percent maximum overshoot of the system by using the
denominator as we do if not requested otherwise. Note that since the system is not in standard
form, this is expected to give an approximate result at best.
b. Calculate the step response of the system analytically.
c. Calculate the exact peak time and percent maximum overshoot using your result in part-b.

Q2. Consider the control system given on the

𝑟(𝑡) 𝑦(𝑡)
right where the plant to be controlled has the
transfer function
+_ 𝐺 (𝑠) 𝐺(𝑠)

1
𝐺(𝑠) =
(𝑠 + 1)(𝑠 + 7)

The controller is the PI controller with the transfer function

𝐾
𝐺 (𝑠) = 𝐾 +
𝑠
Determine the controller parameters 𝐾 and 𝐾 such that the following conditions are satisfied
simultaneously.
 The closed-loop system has steady-state error 𝑒 = 7/12 to unit-ramp input.
 The step response has decaying oscillations of frequency 1 rad/sec.
 The closed-loop system is approximately second-order.

Hint: Parameterize the required complex CL poles as 𝑠 = −𝛽 ± 𝑗𝜔 where 𝜔 is known (by the require-
ments above). To have these CL poles, find a 3rd order polynomial in 𝛽 whose roots (which can be
found using Matlab) will give you possible values for 𝛽.

Q3. Consider the control system

topology given on the right where
the plant transfer function 𝐺 (𝑠) is
given as
1
𝐺 (𝑠) = .
𝑠 + 2𝑠 + 4
a. Calculate the overall closed-
loop transfer function of the
( )
system 𝐺(𝑠) = in terms
( )
of 𝐺𝑐 (𝑠), 𝐺𝑝 (𝑠) and 𝐾𝑓 .
b. In this control system, we define the steady-state error as
𝑒𝑠𝑠 = lim (𝑟(𝑡) − 𝑦(𝑡))
𝑡→∞
Express/derive 𝑒𝑠𝑠 in terms of 𝑅(𝑠), 𝐺 (𝑠), 𝐺 (𝑠) and 𝐾𝑓 in Laplace domain.
c. Let 𝐺𝑐 (𝑠) = 𝐾𝑃 + 𝐾𝐷 𝑠 (i.e., PD controller).
i. Compute (𝐾 , 𝐾 , 𝐾 ) such that
 Closed-loop system shows critically damped behavior
 Settling time (%2 criterion) of the closed-loop step response is 𝑡𝑠 = 1 𝑠.
 Steady-state error 𝑒𝑠𝑠 (defined in part-b) to unit step input is equal to zero. i.e.,
𝑒𝑠𝑠 = 0.
ii. Compute the steady-state error 𝑒𝑠𝑠 (defined in part-b) to unit ramp input.

Q4. Consider a control system whose characteristic polynomial is given as

𝐷(𝑠) = 𝑠 + 𝑠 + 5𝑠 + 𝐾𝑠 + 4.
a. What is the range of 𝐾 values (−∞ < 𝐾 < ∞) for stability?
b. For 𝐾 = 5, find the number of poles in the open right half plane (ORHP), on the imagi-
nary axis, in the open left half plane (OLHP).
c. Find the range of 𝐾 values (−∞ < 𝐾 < ∞) for which the system has 0,1,2,3,4 CL poles
in the open right half plane (ORHP).
d. Determine the value(s) of 𝐾 for which the system has complex poles on the imaginary
axis using Routh Hurwitz Stability Criterion? Find all closed-loop poles at these 𝐾 values.
e. Determine the value(s) of 𝐾 for which the system has complex poles with real parts
equal to −3 using Routh Hurwitz Stability Criterion.
