Introduction:
RANGE
Step 1) Put the data into an ordered list.

Step 2) Check that you have got the same number of data points.

Step 3) The range is the difference between the largest and smallest data

point.

To find the range simply subtract the smallest number from the largest

number.

Step 1) Add up all the numbers in the set.

Step 2) Divide the total by the total number of data points in the set.

Median
Step 1) Order the numbers in the set from smallest to largest.

Step 2) Find the middle number.

If there is an odd number of values in the set, then the median is the middle

Value.

If there is an even number of values in the set, then the median is the

Average of the two middle values.

Chap 10 Multiplication and division (1)
Introduction:
Estimating Products
To estimate the product, we first round off the multiplier and the multiplicand to the
nearest tens, hundreds, or thousands and then multiply the rounded numbers.

EXAMPLE

Estimate the products of 34 and 86.

34 ⟶ 30 34 is rounded down to 30

86 ⟶ 90 86 rounded up to 90

34 ⟶ 30 34 is rounded down to 30

86 ⟶ 90 86 rounded up to 90

Calculate mentally 30 × 90 = 2700

The estimated product is 2700.

Estimating the Quotient

To estimate the quotient, we first round off the divisor and the dividend to the nearest
tens, hundreds, or thousands and then divide the rounded numbers.

EXAMPLE

242 ÷ 22

Round to the nearest ten

240 ÷ 20

Calculate mentally

24 ÷ 2 = 12

Estimated quotient = 12

TEST OF DIVISIBILITY OF 3, 4, 8 AND 9:
RULE OF DIVISIBLE BY 3
A number is divisible by 3, if the sum of its all digits is a multiple of 3 or divisibility by 3.

EXAMPLE:

231

Sum of all the digits of 231 = 2 + 3 + 1 = 6, which is divisible by 3.

Hence, 231 is divisible by 3.

RULE OF DIVISIBLE BY 4
A number is divisible by 4 if its last two digits are divisible by 4.

EXAMPLE:

In 124 the last two digits on its extreme right side is 24 which is divisible by 4.

Hence, 124 is divisible by 4.

RULE OF DIVISIBLE BY 8

RULE OF DIVISIBLE BY 9
A number is divisible by 9, if the sum is a multiple of 9 or if the sum of its digits is
divisible by 9.

EXAMPLE

198

Sum of the digits of 198 = 1 + 9 + 8 = 18, which is divisible by 9.

Hence, 198 is divisible by 9.
