Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Tyler Creighton Date: 4/22/24

Teacher: Mr. Green Block: B

The Capstone Focus I have chosen is: Product Creation Focus

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one
clear sentence):

Creating the Palm flip (ninja warrior obstacle)

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How can physical activity be made fun and inclusive through Ninja Warrior?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I have been looking for an obstacle to further assist me with grip and upper body strength, hand eye
coordination, momentum and timing. I am very familiar with the equipment that my gym has to offer,
however it does not have the unique design that I have researched and will present as my project.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

I have participated in Ninja for 8 plus years and I compete both nationally and in the United States. I love
the challenge and physical demand this sport has. I have always wanted to make my own obstacle to
challenge both myself and teammates. I have very limited experience in design and carpentry, but I am
very creative, and this will be a big challenge for me.
Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I am interested in carpentry and building in general. My inquiry question encompasses a sport that I am
very passionate about and participate in regularly. The Capstone project when completed will assist with
my grade in Careers and give me a good understanding of how to build an obstacle with basic carpentry
skills.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Communication – With Ninja coaches, at Home Depot getting supplies.

Creative and Critical Thinking – design, measurements, execution.
Personal Identity – the sport has been a big part of my life for many years, and I want to design something
to give back to my ninja community.
Time Management – make a timetable outlining the construction of the obstacle and written project.
Research Skills – materials needed to complete my capstone, online videos with similar design,
demonstrate on the actual obstacle to make necessary changes.
Planning and Organization – try to not procrastinate, follow the timetable, asking for help when needed.
Public Speaking and Presentation Skills – practice in front of friends and family to boost my confidence and
ensure they understand what I am saying.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

I will present my project on my Capstone Website and an iMovie presentation of myself using the obstacle.
Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

For my capstone project, I’m going to be making a ninja obstacle that's both exciting and tough. I'll
be using basic materials like wood, pipes, and power tools. The main goal of my project
is to understand how to design an obstacle that's safe yet keeps those who use it engaged and
entertained.

I'll start by researching different ninja obstacles to understand what makes them challenging. This
means looking at their structure and figuring out how to make something similar, but safe for
everyone. Safety is a top priority throughout this project.

Using wood for strength and pipes for moving parts, like swings, I'll put everything together with
power tools. The final obstacle will be showcased in an iMovie where I demonstrate how it's built
and used.

For the evaluation part of things, it will focus on how well the obstacle works, how creative the
design is, how easy it is for people of different skills to use, and how well the iMovie explains
everything.

Through this project, I'm not just making an obstacle. I'm also learning about design, safety, and
how to create an experience that's fun and challenging for everyone involved!

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

I will need a camera for filming and taking pictures of my process, wood and piping to construct my
obstacle, power tools to cut and assemble the obstacle components, and space to test and use my
obstacle.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

My mentors will be my coaches Micheal and Ryan throughout this process. They will help me plan and
test my obstacles. My coaches are very experienced in this sport and can offer me suggestions to make it
more fun.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

My possible limitations could be procrastination, finding the time to construct the obstacle, materials that
are strong enough to hold someone and wouldn’t snap. Finding time and space at the gym to test it could
also be an obstacle.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I need to make sure that I use my time wisely and not procrastinate. I will be sure to use all the time I
have at the gym wisely.

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references:

research, videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project
that shows you are able to access the key information that you will need to be able to
complete this project/work. Your list should be written using correct APA formatting.
