1. Key Figures

Total receipts of the construction sector, at $411.1 billion in 2022, increased by 3.8% compared with 2021.
Total receipts of the real estate activities industry, at $174.3 billion in 2022, decreased by 2.9% compared with 2021.
Total receipts of the architecture, surveying and engineering services industry, at $26.7 billion in 2022, increased by 5.7% compared with 2021.

2. Construction Sector

Comparing 2022 with 2021, total receipts of the construction sector increased by 3.8% to $411.1 billion.
Operating expenses increased by 1.9% to $282.0 billion.
Compensation of employees and payments to labour-only sub-contractors increased by 4.7% to $94.4 billion.
Gross surplus increased by 19.0% to $34.7 billion.
Industry value added increased by 6.3% to $121.8 billion.
This industry comprised some 26 600 establishments and directly engaged about 186 900 persons in 2022.

3. Real Estate Activities Industry

Comparing 2022 with 2021, total receipts of the real estate activities industry decreased by 2.9% to $174.3 billion.
Operating expenses increased by 9.0% to $57.2 billion.
Compensation of employees decreased by 2.3% to $33.6 billion.
Gross surplus decreased by 12.3% to $75.4 billion.
Industry value added decreased by 7.6% to $111.4 billion.
This industry comprised some 10 900 establishments and engaged about 122 800 persons in 2022.

4. Architecture, Surveying and Engineering Services Industry

Comparing 2022 with 2021, total receipts of the architecture, surveying and engineering services industry increased by 5.7% to $26.7 billion.
Operating expenses increased by 1.6% to $7.4 billion.
Compensation of employees increased by 6.1% to $15.5 billion.
Gross surplus increased by 13.1% to $3.8 billion.
Industry value added increased by 5.2% to $18.7 billion.
This industry comprised some 2 400 establishments and engaged about 27 400 persons in 2022.

7. Explanatory Notes

Survey Objectives

Objectives
The Annual Survey of Economic Activities (ASEA) aims to provide statistical information for gauging the business performance and operating
characteristics of different economic sectors and for evaluating their contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product. The survey results are
useful to both the Government and the private sector in formulating policies and making decisions.

Legislation
The ASEA is conducted under Part III of the Census and Statistics Ordinance (Chapter 316 of the Laws of Hong Kong). It was notified as a
mandatory statistical survey in Legal Notice 218 of 2009 in the Government of the HKSAR Gazette of November 6, 2009. The Ordinance
stipulates that all collected information which may enable identification of individual establishments should be kept in strict confidence and be used
solely for statistical purposes. Only aggregate information, which does not reveal details of individual establishments, will be released.

Survey Methodology

Classification of industries
The Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC) Version 2.0 has been adopted in the survey for sample selection, data collection and
dissemination of survey results. The HSIC is devised by using the United Nations’ International Standard Industrial Classification as the framework,
with local adaptation to reflect the structure of the Hong Kong economy.

Survey coverage
The survey covers establishments engaging in the following major economic activities under HSIC Version 2.0:
a. industrial sector;
b. building, construction and real estate sectors;
c. import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors;
d. transportation, storage and courier services sector;
e. information and communications, financing and insurance, professional and business services sectors; and
f. social and personal services sectors.
