The existing Queens Hotel in the Downtown Historical District in Barrie Ontario, It was rejuvenated with the help of the cities facade program and its current owner Rob Hamilton over a decade ago. Beautifully maintained and always evolving, it is a great example of the visual presence that design & form can achieve.
Taking clues !om the existing structure, the era of the presentation and colour harmonies that enhance the overa" visual appearance the designs for the three blade signs had to be individua"y unique as we" as working as a group and thirdly the entire concept.
Designed in Illustrator CS5

Production Step 1
VECTOR IDENTIFICATION Once the Design was realized the Vector Lines had to simplied to identify the shapes and layers. Going beyond a sandblasted sign with limited layers, we needed this process to carve at least ten dierent levels with arching as well as bevels.
Production Step 2
CREATING AN ENROUTE CUTTING FILE After simplifying the vector lines a .rou le was developed. This being the most complex layered les we were about to produce, we enlisted the guidance of of MultiCam Dan, a leading expert with the software. He graciously guided the les into the production format.
Production Step 3
CNC ROUTING Using the 3000 series Router from MultiCam Canada and 18lb HDU 2 Precision Board each sign was cut twice with a 3/16 bit, It was done in 3 passes milling away and getting sharper until First pass was 18min. the second 24min. and nally 42 min. for the last pass.

Production Step 1
MOUNTING HARDWARE INTO CORE We predrilled the core and insert an 10 eye bolt with washers and nuts prior to laminating the. I have had great success with the Spray Bomb Zinsser primer sealer BIN Shellac as a base. Then brush on as a second coat of the Zinsser Primer which is a brighter Primmer also and will make the paint pop.
Production Step 2
BONDING With the front and back maximum thickness at 2 and an insert of a 1 core the Blade Sign now laminated with Gorilla glue is a full 5 thick. You cant use enough clamps on this stage, the edges being the most crucial. We also counter sunk a few screws (hand tightened) then ll with epoxy
Production Step 3
OLD SCHOOL HAND PAINTING With my wife Wendy, we painted these in the evenings when we it was quiet and we could focus on the quality of what we were trying to achieve. We used Sign Painters One Shot Sign Enamel Paints for the vivid nish, and a nal sprayed of Speed Dry UV Acrylic Clear In the one shot series at least 2 coats as a nale.
