PROBLEMS
1. In a food processing unit, a brine solution is heated from -150C to -70C in a parallel flow heat
exchanger by water entering at 350C and leaving at 200C at the rate of 12 kg/min. Determine
heat exchanger area for an overall heat transfer coefficient of 850 W/m2K. For water Cp = 4.187
kJ/kgK
2. Determine the area required in parallel flow heat exchanger to cool oil from 60°C to 30°C using
water available at 20°C. The outlet temperature of the water is 26°C. The rate of flow of oil is 10
kg/s. The specific heat of the oil is 2200 J/kg K. The overall heat transfer coefficient U = 300
W/m2K. Compare the area required for a counter flow exchanger.
3. The flow rates of hot and cold water streams running through a parallel flow heat exchanger are
0.2 kg/s and 0.5 kg/s respectively. The inlet temperatures on the hot and cold sides are 75 0C and
200C respectively. The exit temperature of hot water is 450C. If the individual heat transfers
coefficients on both sides are 650 W/m2K, calculate the area of the heat exchanger. (Ans: 2.66
m2)
4. A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using super heated stream is used to heat water at
the rate of 10500 kg/h. The steam enters the heat exchanger at 1800C and leaves at 1300C. The
inlet and exit temperatures of water are 300C and 800C respectively. If overall heat transfer
coefficient is 814 W/m2K, calculate the heat transfer area. (Ans: 7.5 m2)
5. Determine the area required for a shell and tube heat exchanger with two tube passes to cool oil
at rate of 10 kg/s from 60°C to 30°C flowing in the shell using water at 20°C passing through the
tubes and heated up to 26°C. The specific heat of the oil is 2200 J/kg K. The value of overall heat
transfer coefficient is 300 W/m2 K.
6. Calculate for the following cases, the surface area required for a heat exchanger which is
required to cool 3200 kg/h of benzene (Cp = 1.74 kJ/kgK) from 720C to 420C. The cooling water
(Cp = 4.18 kJ/kg K) at 150C has a flow rate of 2200 kg/h.
i. Single pass counter flow, (Ans: 5.1 m2)
ii. 1-4 exchanger (one-shell pass and four –tube passes, and (Ans: 5.66 m2)
iii. Cross flow single pass with water mixed and benzene unmixed. (Ans: 5.54 m2)
For each configuration, the overall heat transfer coefficient may be taken as 0.28 kW/m2K
7. In a food processing plant, water is to be cooled from 180C to 6.50C by using brine
solution entering at -1.10C and leaving at 2.90C. What area is required when using shell
and tube heat exchanger with water making one shell pass and brine making two tube
passes. Assume an overall heat transfer coefficient of 850 W/m2K and design heat load of
6000 W. (Ans: 0.68 m2)
7. Saturated steam at 1000C is condensing on shell side of a shell and tube heat exchanger. The
cooling water enters the tube at 300C and leaves at 700C. Calculate LMTD if the arrangement is
(i) Parallel flow (ii) Counter flow and (iii) Cross flow. (Ans:47.20C)
8. A refrigerator is designed to cool 250 kg/hr of hot liquid of sp.heat 3350 J/kgK at 1200C using a
parallel flow arrangement. 1000 kg/hr of cooling water is available at a temperature of 10 0C. If
the overall heat transfer coefficient is 1160 W/m2K and the surface area of the heat exchanger is
0.25 m2, calculate (i)the effectiveness of heat exchanger (ii) Actual heat transfer and (iii)the
outlet temperatures of liquid and water. (Ans: 0.646; 16520 W; 48.90C; 24.220C)
9. 16.5 kg/s of the product at 6500C (Cp=3.55 kJ/kg K), in a chemical plant, are to be used to heat
20.5 kg/s of the incoming fluid from 1000C (Cp = 4.2 kJ/kg K). If the overall heat transfer
coefficient is 0.95 kW/m2K and the installed heat transfer surface area is 44m2, calculate the
fluid outlet temperatures for the parallel flow and counter flow arrangements.
