The streets were empty, and the only sound was the echo of footsteps. The streetlights cast a dim
glow, creating long shadows along the pavement. John hurried home, his heart racing with
every step. He couldn't shake the feeling of the sound of shoes on gravel behind him .

DEGREES OF COMPARISON
When we use adjectives to compare persons or things, we are said to be using
degrees of comparison.

The term positive degree relates to adjectives that does not make a comparison. The positive
degree is the simplest form of the adjective.

A comparative adjective is used to compare one person, action, thing or state to another. It adds
the suffix -er to the original adjective. It is comparing two things only.
E.g. Sam’s torch is brighter than John’s torch. Summer days are longer than winter ones .My
sunflower is taller than yours.

• A superlative adjective compares three or more nouns. It shows the highest degree or the
most quality. George is the nicest person I've ever met.
• The tallest building in New York is the Empire State Building.
