Health and Wellness Introductory Course

Course Name: Health and Wellness Intro

Course Description:

The three-week course for military and veterans focuses on holistic wellness, covering nutrition,

complementary and integrative medicine (CIM), and exercise. Participants learn evidence-based

strategies for optimizing physical health, mental well-being, and performance. The curriculum

includes workshops on meal planning, dietary guidelines, and nutritional supplements tailored to

the unique needs of service members. CIM modules explore alternative therapies such as

acupuncture, yoga, and mindfulness meditation to alleviate stress and promote healing. Exercise

sessions incorporate functional fitness training and personalized workout plans to enhance

strength, endurance, and mobility. Through this comprehensive program, military personnel and

veterans gain practical skills for long-term health and resilience.

Course Outcomes:

• Participants demonstrate enhanced knowledge of nutrition principles and dietary

practices conducive to optimal physical health

• Participants adopt healthier eating habits, resulting in improved energy levels, body

composition, and overall well-being

• Participants develop mindfulness skills and coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety,

and other mental health challenges.


• Participants integrate CIM modalities into their wellness routines, leveraging holistic

approaches to health and healing

• Participants engage in regular physical activity and exercise, recognizing the important of

movement for overall health, performance, and longevity

General Information

• Duration: 3 weeks

• Class time: 90 minutes

• Format: In person or online

• Prerequisites: None

• Materials: Handouts will be provided to include resource material, pens and paper for

note-taking.

Course Plan

Week 1: Nutrition (90 minutes)

• Educate participants on the importance of nutrition in supporting physical

performance and overall well-being

• Provide evidence-based guidance on balanced meal planning, nutrient timing, and

hydration strategies

• Equip participants with practical skills to make informed dietary choices, including

reading labels, portion control, and meal prepping

Week 2: Complementary and Integrative Medicine (90 minutes)

• Introduce participants to mindfulness-based practices and their potential benefits for

stress reduction and emotional regulation


• Facilitate discussions on the role of CIM modalities, such as meditation and yoga, in

promoting mental wellness and enhancing coping mechanisms.

• Teach relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle

relaxation, to manage symptoms of anxiety and PTSD.

Week 3: Physical Fitness and Performance (90 minutes)

• Provide instruction on safe and effective exercise techniques, including proper form,

progression, and injury prevention strategies

• Explain the benefits of exercise and movement and provide suggested guidelines for

different demographics and functional fitness tips for specific work fields

• Assess participants' current fitness levels and individual goals to tailor exercise

prescriptions and workout plans

Throughout the course, participants will receive personalized guidance from instructors, peer

support from fellow participants, and access to resources for continued learning and self-care. By

integrating lessons, interactive activities, and practical applications, the program empowers

military personnel and veterans to take control of their health and well-being, fostering resilience

and readiness for the challenges ahead.

Additional Information:

There will be no graded assessments. Practical skills will be monitored, and assessed for correct

form, technique, etc. There will be an end of course feedback sheet to assist the instructors in

adequately preparing and constructing future and relevant content. Any and all feedback in
