What Is Formative Assessment
What Is Formative Assessment
Formative is also known as assessment for learning. Ano naman kaya itong
assessment for learning? Assessment for learning is an approach to teaching and
learning that creates feedback which is then used to improve students’ performance.
Mas na involved si pupils in the learning process and from this mag gegain si pupil
need nilang I attain.
It is also a process that involves teachers using evidence about what the learners
know and improve their teaching.
slow, average, and advance learners and by that I aadjust ni teacher yung mga
ginamit nya na strategies and mas I improve ito for her pupils to have a better
understanding in the certain topic.

The purpose of for.ass is to provide ongoing feedback and adjustment to instruction.
It is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by
instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Formative assessment conducted during and after instruction. For example, nagpa
submit ka ng 1 or 2 sentences identifying the main concept of a lecture by that,
ng feedback for them habang maaga pa like you can adjust your instructional
materials or strategies na gagamitin mo sa pagtuturo in able for them to understand
better.
Students Involvement. Ofcourse involve na involve dito si students. Mas mae-
encouraged si student to attain more learnings or better understanding about a
certain topic. By giving feedback to them is malalaman nila kung saan sila mag
aadjust and by that mas mae-encouraged sila to learn well.
Student Motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something without any
obvious external rewards. You do it because it's enjoyable and interesting, rather
than because of an outside incentive or pressure to do it, such as a reward or
deadline. By giving students timely feedback before the end of a unit students stay
on track with their learning and are afforded the chance to grow at their own pace. All
of this leads to an increase in student engagement and motivation.
Teacher Role. To provide immediate, specific feedback and instructional correctives.
By gathering evidences towards its students is one of the teacher’s role is giving
feedback to them. Kailangan maging alerto si teacher on giving feedback, like dapat
paano sila mag aadjust in the learning process.
Learning Emphasized. By having deep understanding about the subject matter is
ditto na papasok yung application. Ma aaplay mo yung mga natututunan mo at you
can reason out if you are questioned. For example, the teacher is asking you a
question during the discussion, then ikaw naman na student ka dahil nga nakikinig
Level of specify. Highly specific, and individual. Sa ditto is magkakaroon ka ng strong
consistency about what you are believing. Like for example, you are sticking on that
theory because yan yung tama para sayo.
Structure. The flexibility means students have the power to choose how to learn a
particular subject or concept. It also allows them to work on the activities at their own
pace. It is adaptable kasi it is incorporate thinking blocks or tiered activities that
challenge students at their individual skill levels while still addressing the same
learning objectives.
Techniques. Formative assessment is an informal observation, why? Because unlike
sa summative assessment is you can formally observe your pupils by having a
consistent evidence about their performance, like kung ano yung score na nakuha
nya is yun na talaga yun. In short it involves consistency of the numbers they got.
Informal formative assessment uses everyday learning activities as potential
assessments that provide evidence of students' learning in different modes. Informal
formative assessment is spontaneous, when we say spontaneous ito yung
unplanned. Ina assess mo sya as informal as observing the learner’s work.
Impact for learning. Why?
they enhancing their reasoning skills and intellectual capacity that leads to have a
strong, positive , and long lasting learning impacts to them.
Forms of FOR. ASS
Quizzes and Test. It will provide immediate feedback on students’ understanding of
the concept taught. Instructors can prepare short online quizzes for students during
or after a lesson before moving them to the next level. You can also make the
assessment more game-like and fun by including points and rewards, badges, or
leaderboards. Magkakaroon ng immediate feedback to enhance what they need to
enhance in order for them to adjust what they need to adjust para magkakaroon sila
Classroom discussion is a great way to increase student participation in the
classroom. Open-end discussions and debates allow students to express their
thoughts and opinion regarding a topic and foster an active learning environment.
Peer Assessment. It is a way of assessing one’s assessment. For example, you
instruct your pupils to assess the work of their classmates and by that magkakaroon
understanding nila about that certan topic and they tend to realize what they are
lacking into or magkakaron sila ng thought na “ay bakit hindi ko naisip ito” chuchu.
Exit tickets collect feedback on students' understanding at the end of a class and
provide the students with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned. They
can be helpful in prompting students to begin to synthesize and integrate the
information gained during a class period. For example, gauge understanding with
emojis, you will ask your pupils to circle one or more emojis that reflect how they feel
now about today’s lesson and explain the reason why. So si teacher is mag prepare
ng activity sheet na may emojis and questions na nakalagay and then maglalagay ka
ng statement which is dudugtungan nila, like for example, I choose this emoji
because chuchuchu by that malalaman mo kung may natutunan ba sila about sa
discussions a while ago.
A one-minute paper is simply that: students are given 60 seconds—either at the end
of a section of work, or at the end of a lecture period—to jot down on paper some
anonymous responses to an aspect of that day's class session. It is a mode of
feedback na nagpoprovide a level of input and control to the students which
encouraging them to have a motivation and active learning.
Concept maps are visual representations of information. It helps you dig an idea into
detail. The example of it is venn diagram, t-charts, tables, flowcharts, or other form of
charts activity. Or in short it is just like contrasting activity.
Think-pair-share is a collaborative learning strategy where students work together to
solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. This strategy
requires students to (1) think individually about a topic or answer to a question; and
(2) share ideas with classmates.
Self-Assessment/Reflection. Dito is at the end of the lesson is magbibigay ka ng time
for what they have learned about the discussion earlier, yun nga reflection. They
have their self-assessment kung may natututunan ba talaga sila sa diniscuss nyo o
wala. By this as instructor malalaman mo kung sino yung mga naging attentive sa
klase mo at kung sino yung hindi. That’s how you change or adjust your starategy in
Types of For. Ass
Teachers embed assessment in instruction by including specific activities that allow
children to demonstrate their current knowledge and skills without having to stop for
a formal test. For example, perhaps a teacher has been providing children with
instruction about rhyme and other word characteristics.

During Instruction. Student assessment enables instructors to measure the
effectiveness of their teaching by linking student performance to specific learning
objectives. As a result, teachers are able to institutionalize effective teaching choices
and revise ineffective ones in their pedagogy.
Between Lesson. Formative assessment is done at set times, such as the beginning
and end of a course: It should in fact be a continuous process, not a one-time event
or even a series of events. It is the day-to-day process of assessing students (in
different ways) and gathering evidence of learning. Formative assessments
are typically used frequently within each unit of study. Teachers
often set up certain rhythms within units or semesters, and perform
formative assessments daily, weekly, or in the middle of each
lesson. Teachers use the feedback they gather to inform their
instruction to be most effective.
As students learn, they will experience challenges along the way—they may find it
difficult to understand a concept or to grasp a few examples. Without formative
assessments, it is almost impossible for the teacher to recognize when the student is
struggling and to provide the right support.
1. It evaluates the learning process and the learner’s progress at the same time.
2. A formative assessment is collaborative as it measures the student’s progress
and the effectiveness of the teaching method.
3. Formative assessments are interwoven with the ongoing teaching and
learning process.
4. It is a fluid method of evaluation. The student’s progress is not measured
against a standard or benchmark unlike what you will find with summative
assessment methods.
5. Formative assessment requires the instructors and the students to become
intentional learners.
6. The aim of formative assessment is to gather actionable feedback that
improves the overall teaching and learning process.
7. It is a diagnostic method of evaluation.
8. Results from formative assessments are immediately made available.
9. Formative assessments are non-graded.
