የሚያምታቱን የእንግሊዘኛ ቃላቶች
There are many English words that sound the similar when we read them but their meanings are
totally different. Let’s look at the differences between some commonly confused words:

 Advice vs Advise:

Advice is a noun that means a suggestion for a beneficial course of action.

Advise is a verb that means to give advice.

For example I gave him some advice about taking care of pets.

I advise you to study hard for the exam.

 Effect vs Affect:

Effect is usually a noun that means a result or the power to produce a result.

Affect is usually a verb that means to influence or to produce an effect upon.

For example The effect of the medication was immediate.

The weather can greatly affect your mood.

 Except vs Expect:

Except is usually a preposition that means excluding.

Expect is a verb that means to anticipate or look forward to the coming or occurrence of.

For example Everyone is going to the party except for me.

I expect it will rain later today.

 Lie vs Lay:

Lie is an intransitive verb that means to recline or rest on a surface, and its past tense is “lay”.

Lay is a transitive verb that means to put or set down, and its past tense is “laid”.

For example I am going to lie down for a while.

Please lay the book on the table.

 Than vs Then:

Than is a conjunction used in comparisons.

Then is an adverb that means at that time, or next in order of time.

For example He is taller than me.

We went to the park, and then we had ice cream.

 Farther vs Further:

Farther refers to physical distance. Further refers to metaphorical, or figurative, distance.

For example The restaurant is much farther than I thought.

We need to discuss this matter further.

 Its vs It’s:

Its is a possessive form of “it”.

It’s is a contraction of “it is” or “it has”.

For example The cat is eating its food.

It’s a beautiful day today.

 Who vs Whom:

Who is used as a subject in a sentence.

Whom is used as an object in a sentence.

For example Who is going to the concert?

To whom was the letter written?

 To vs Two vs Too:

To is a preposition or part of an infinitive verb.

Two is the number 2.

Too means also or excessively.

For example I am going to the store.

I have two apples.

I am tired, too.

 Stationary vs Stationery:

Stationary means not moving or not changing.

Stationery refers to paper, pens, pencils, and other office supplies.

For example The car remained stationary in the parking lot.

I bought some new stationery for school.
