In celebration of the 2023 National Reading Month, Carlos F. Gonzales High School, through the
initiative of the CFGHS English Club, announces the conduct of the CFGHS Celebration of 2023
National Reading Month on November 6 to December 1, 2023, with the theme: “PAGBASA: Pag-asa
sa MATATAG na Kinabukasan”.

1. The conduct of the activities aims to:


a. Help students develop and/or improve their essential skills in reading;
b. Make students think critically and creatively in presenting literary works;
c. Develop confidence, cooperation, and independence in students as they produce
an output; and
d. Encourage every member of the school to read and inspire others to find their own love of reading.

2. The aforementioned activities will take place on each of the assigned weeks/dates.

3. All student participants shall be excused from their classes on the scheduled date of elimination for
the particular contest(s) they will be joining and on the day of the contest proper itself.

4. The said contests shall conduct their elimination rounds within November 23-28, 2023 (weekdays
only) to be held in a classroom/school library per grade level to be arranged by the English
teacher(s) concerned in the particular grade level(s) and to be judged by the assigned English
teachers.

5. The final list of entries must be submitted to English Club advisers (Mae Angeline C. Milan –
Morning Shift and Marife D. De Jesus – Afternoon Shift) on or before November 29, 2023.

6. Only four (4) entries per category shall be allowed to present on stage during the contest proper on
December 1, 2023. The judges will choose the winner/s that will be awarded as Champion, 1st
Placer, 2nd Placer, and 3rd Placer.

7. The judges shall come from different academic departments other than English.

8. The decisions of the board of judges shall be considered final and irrevocable

9. All winners and their coaches will receive a Certificate of Recognition.

10. Wide dissemination of and compliance with this memorandum is desired.

GUIDELINES AND MECHANICS FOR THE ENGLISH OLYMPICS ACTIVITIES ON THE


2023 NATIONAL READING MONTH CELEBRATION

CONTEST NAME PARTICIPANTS MECHANICS
2023 Spelling Bee Grade 10 Students  There are three (3) rounds:
1. Preliminary Round – Grade 10 English Teacher per class will
conduct a spelling bee divided into 3 levels: Easy (1pt. each),
Average (3pts. each), and Difficult (5pts. each). The highest
scorer/s should have at least 60% of the total number of points or
a score of 39/65, for him/her to advance to the next round.
2. Semi-Final Round – The qualifiers will compete to move to the
final round. Whiteboard and marker, or illustration board and chalk
will be used by the participants. Those who achieved at least 60%
of the total number of points. Will qualify for the final round.

For Preliminary and Semi-Final rounds, contestants will be given


ten (10) words each to spell in the Easy and Average levels and
five (5) words for the Difficult level.

3. Final Round – Tasks will be divided into 3: Written (20pts.),


Listening (10pts.), and Oral (5pts.).

 In case of tied-up scores, only one average word will be given in the
clincher round to break the tie. In the event that both/all contestants in
the clincher round get the correct answer, another word will be given.
The same procedure will be followed until the tie is broken.

 After three rounds, the scores of each contestant are added together.
The contestant who gets the highest total score becomes the spelling
bee champion; the second highest, the first runner-up, the third
highest, the second runner-up, and the fourth highest will be the 3rd
runner-up winner.
