CSUK Lesson Retrieval Practice – Answer Sheet

Operating Systems (OCR)
1. What is system software, and what are the two main types of system software? [3]

System software is software which allows a computer to run and to be maintained [1]. The two main types
of system software are Operating System software [1] and Utility Software [1].

2. What is the function of the kernel in the operating system? [2]

The kernel is the heart of the operating system and is responsible for looking after the most low-level
hardware operations [1]. It is the kernel that applications make use of when they want to operate the
computer’s hardware [1].

3. What are the five major roles of the operating system, and what is the function of Memory
Management? [7]

The five major roles of the operating system are Memory Management [1], Peripheral Management [1],
Multi-Tasking [1], Security [1], and User Interface [1]. Memory Management is responsible for managing
the RAM [1]. The OS copies the application from the harddrive to the RAM when you load an application
and ensures that each program that loads has its own space on the RAM [1].

4. What is Peripheral Management? [2]

Peripheral Management is the process of controlling peripheral devices that are attached to a computer
such as a printer or speakers [1]. The operating system controls these devices and gives programs access
to them [1].

5. What is the User Interface, and what are the three major types of interfaces provided by an
operating system? [4]

The User Interface is the interface that enables a user to interact with a computer [1]. The three major
types of interfaces provided by an operating system are Graphical User Interface (GUI) [1], Menu Driven
Interface [1], and Command Line Interface [1].

6. What is Multi-Tasking? [1]

Multi-Tasking is the process of managing the CPU's processes so that several programs can run at once,
with each application being given a share of CPU time [1].

7. What is Security & User Management, and how does an operating system provide security to
users? [2]

Security & User Management are the processes through which an operating system manages users and
ensures that a user's data is only seen by them and not by others [1]. The OS provides security to users by
giving them usernames and passwords so that data i

8. What is the role of device drivers in an operating system? [2]

Device drivers are software programs that allow the operating system to communicate with hardware
devices such as printers, scanners, and graphics cards [1]. They act as a translator between the operating
system and the device, converting instructions fro

9. What is the difference between system software and application software? [2]

System software is responsible for managing and maintaining a computer [1], while application software
performs specific tasks for the user [1].

10. What is virtual memory management in the operating system? [2]

Virtual memory management is a technique used by operating systems to use hard disk space as if it were
RAM memory [1]. It allows the operating system to run more programs than the physical memory can
handle by temporarily transferring data from RAM to th
