Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: 1st Grade Learns Vertical Addition/Subtraction

Objectives:
Students will be able to solve one-, two- and three-digit addition/subtraction problems.
Students will be able to recognize when to carry a number to the left due to the quantity.
Students will be able to recognize when they must break down a number to subtract and end up
with a positive number.
Students will be able to acknowledge repetition and memorize small addition/subtraction facts.
State Standards:
1.NSBT.3 Compare two two-digit numbers based on the meanings of the tens and one’s 5fdigits, using
the words greater than, equal to, or less than

1.ATO.5 Recognize how counting relates to addition and subtraction.

1.ATO.6 Demonstrate: a. addition and subtraction through 20; b. fluency with addition and related
subtraction facts through 10.

1.NSBT.4 Add through 99 using concrete models, drawings, and strategies based on place value to: a.
add a two-digit number and a one-digit number, understanding that sometimes it is necessary to
compose a ten (regroup); b. add a two-digit number and a multiple of 10.

Context: Gaining familiarity with addition and subtraction problems to the point where it
becomes muscle memory will help students become comfortable with vertical addition,
subtraction, multiplication, word problems, fractions, decimals and much more in the future.
Before this lesson students need to be somewhat familiar with one digit addition/subtraction and
be able to compare which are greater or less than each other to expand on that & after this lesson
students will learn how to apply this to real world problems or move into vertical multiplication.
Data: The students will be divided into 3 completely random groups. The groups will be separated
by Teacher based instruction, group activity and individual practice. After 15 minutes the stations will
rotate to the left and in the end there will be an exit ticket.

Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Procedures:
Introduction (30 minutes): I will start by standing at the door and greeting each student.
As they file into the classroom, I will tell them to start working on this worksheet (linked below)
as I wait for all the students to settle in. After about 10-15 minutes I will walk around and check
on the student’s progress and give appropriate feedback. My clipboard has a page segregated into
columns where I will separate the students into groups based on which they struggle with in
order to set them up for the activity. Then in order to get them started with the lesson I will play
2 short videos on vertical addition and subtraction. These videos are super engaging and
interactive for the kids! It has characters, loud colors, question/answers and many examples to be
able to break down the concept for the students. Instead of taking notes I’d like them to just
watch and grasp the content before they try it with me in the first activity. After the videos are
over I will separate the classroom into 3 stations, teacher based, group work and independent.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): For this activity I will stand in the front of the classroom
and write a problem on the board and have the students mimic what I write on their individual
whiteboards. Then step by step I will re go over what the video explained and to make sure
students are interactive and grasping the content, I will pick a few volunteers to come up and
write on the big white board rather than their individual one. After 20 minutes of this I will ask if
anyone has any questions and come around once again to check their work on their whiteboards
and ensure that everyone followed along before the timer goes off and they have to move to the
next station.

Collaborative (15 minutes): In this station the students will help each other and be able to
work together to solve these problems and answer each other’s questions. In this activity they
will be using the counting game cards. These cards will have one digit addition and subtraction
problems in order to increase the student’s familiarity with easier math problems that can be
memorized in order for the two/three-digit math problems to become easier.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): In this station students will work independently on this
worksheet where you roll a dice and add or subtract the numbers that you get on the die. This
will give them some direct exposure with not only one digit but two digit math problems as well.

Closure (10 minutes) : After they finish in their stations everyone will go back to their
desks and have 10 minutes to answer as many of these as possible in 10 minutes. The point of
this is to see how well they built their muscle memory for their addition and subtraction
problems and ensure everyone is ready to move on. After 10 minutes I will collect all the
worksheets and grade the students based on what they completed.

Rationale:
https://youtu.be/Q9sLfMrH8_w?si=ncFWwe3zjk928Fre
I chose this because it provides so many in depth examples and breaks them down step by
step. The video is extremely strong and effective because they were connecting addition
problems to real world situations, including images, interactive prompts, subtitles for
those that may be hard of hearing and text to speech for those that may not be able to see.
This makes it accessible for all types of children with all types of needs and preferred
ways of learning.
