Introduction
The natural water content also called the natural moisture content is the ratio of the weight of the
water to the weight of the solid in a given mass of soil the ratio is usually expressed as
percentage. The moisture content of a soil is very important. A small design change in moisture
content significantly alter the properties of soil. Soil may be composed of a combination the solid
material water and air while all three of these phases may occupy volume only the solid and
water are considered to have weight. The moisture content of a soil is usually represented by the
(w) letter.
The moisture content may be expressed as a decimal number or multiplied by 100 and expressed
as a percentage.
Objective.
• To determine the amount of water present in a quantity of soil in terms of its dry weight
expressed in percentage.
• To be able to identify the properties of soil when moist and when dried.
• To determine the moisture content of a sample of soil taken from the design project region.

Apparatus and Material
1: 1 container
2: weighing Balance
3: Drying Oven

PRODECURE.
1. Take empty clean container and mark it with and identifying number or code.
2. Weight of container and it was measured and recorded as W1(gr)
3. The soil in added to the container and its weight measured
4. The measured weight in the recorded as W2(gr)
5. Place it drying oven at constant temperature of (110 C) for 24 hours
6. After 24 hours remove the moisture tin from drying oven and recorded this as W3(gr)
Mw=150g
After 24 hours remove the drying oven
MS=140.5
MW-MS=150-140.5=9.5g
CONCLUSION.
The moisture content of the sample in terms of water by volume was a calculated value 6.766%
