Clinical engineers are responsible for maintaining safety and functionality of hospital equipment and designing monitoring, diagnostic, and treatment equipment. They perform tests on new and existing equipment, manage equipment lifecycles including purchases and repairs, and ensure compliance with standards. They also design customized devices like improved neonatal incubators and call buttons for paralyzed patients.

Safety First!

Clinical Engineers are responsible for maintaining the safety and

functionality of hospital equipment and design equipment for
monitoring, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation or research.

Medical Equipment
The term ‘medical equipment’ applies to something as simple as a mobile
infusion stand used to transport heavy medical equipment around the hospital
to complex life-support devices such as anaesthetic machines that keep
people alive during surgery.
Other examples of medical equipment include stethoscopes used to listen to the
heart through the chest, infusion pumps used to deliver drugs in very precise doses
and beds where patients rest during treatment in wards.

What does a Clinical Engineer do?

www.ipem.ac.uk
Clinical Engineers perform tests on equipment when it is delivered to the hospital to make sure there was no damage during transport, on an annual basis to check it is still doing
what it is supposed to and on an ad-hoc basis when it requires repair.
Clinical Engineers are also responsible for the life-cycle management of the devices. This includes evaluating equipment prior to purchase, managing contracts with external
companies, trouble-shooting when issues arise, making sure that the organisation is compliant with National standards and making sure the item is disposed of appropriately.

They can also be responsible for designing and developing new devices or modifying existing
devices to meet specialist needs within the clinical environment.
Some examples include:
• Neonatal incubators – this complex medical device in which premature or sick infants may
be kept in a controlled environment has been used since the late 1890s. But new clinical
technology improved the device significantly and has played a large role in the decline of
infant mortality.
• A “ Call Button” switch extension – this was designed specifically to enable a severely
paralysed patient with only slight head movement to call for attention.
