BRIEF INTRODUCTION / DISCUSSION

Texts that have more than one mode such as, print, image,
sound, and movement are called Multimodal texts. It contains elements of
audio, visual, and/or animation along with the written language (words,
sentences, in a diversity of segments and formats).

In the composition field, multimodal elements are commonly

defined in terms of the five modes of communication namely:

1. Linguistic – word choice; delivery of spoken or written text (tone);

organization into sentences, phrases, paragraphs, etc.; coherence of
individual words and ideas.

3
2. Visual – color, layout, style, size, perspective

3. Gestural – facial expressions, hand gestures, body language, interactions

between people

4. Spatial – arrangement, organization, proximity between people and

objects.

5. Audio – music; sound effects; ambient noise/sounds; silence; tone;

emphasis and accent of voice in spoken language; volume of sound.

These terms are often paired with the language of design to create a more
thorough conversation about the different modes, especially when referencing
compositions that combine words and images, such as posters, presentations
and websites.
Examples of Multimodal Texts are posters, picture books, brochure,
comics, animations, film, e-books, social media, dance performances,
music videos, drama, etc.…
