Biological Treatment - Activated Sludge

Question 1: Write brief notes on the following

- What are the types of biological treatment process

- The purpose of secondary wastewater treatment
- Phases of biomass growth and food utilization.

Question 2:

- What are the Different aerobic and anaerobic wastewater processes and how they work?

Question 3:

- State the advantages and disadvantages for aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment.

Question 4:

Design an activated sludge reactors to treat a waste flow of 20000 m3/d with a BOD5 of 222 mg/L after
primary treatment. The effluent BOD5 is to be less than 20 mg/L.
assume
- Xr =10000mg/L ,
- X= 3500mg/L,
- Y=0.5 , kd = 0.07 d-1 ,
- F/M = 0.4kg BOD5/kg MLSS
Use the data to calculate the following :
- The reactor volume.
- Mean cell residence time ( day)
- The recirculation rate.
- The hydraulic retention time.
- The sludge wasting flow rate.
- Volumetric loading.

Question 5:

Design the conventional aeration tanks required for a wastewater treatment plant given the following data:

- Design sewage flow= 72,000 m3/day.

- BOD of raw sewage= 300 mg/l.
- BOD of final effluent = 15 mg/l.
- Efficiency of primary treatment in BOD removal = 30%
- Allowable organic Load= L= 450 gm
- Returned sludge ratio= 0.5

Question 6:

A conventional activated sludge sewage treatment plant is designed to treat 10,000 m3/d of wastewater and
provide final effluent quality of 25 mg/l BOD5 and 20 mg/l total suspended solids.
The design and operational parameters of the plant as follows:

- BOD5 of primary treated effluent = 200 mg/l.

- Cell residence time or sludge age (θ c) = 8 days.
- Cell Yield Coefficient (Y) = 0.7 mg MLVSS/ mg BOD5
- MLVSS concentration in the aeration basin (X) = 3000 mg/l.
- MLSS concentration in the return sludge (X r) = 12 g/l.
- Endogenous decay coefficient (K d) = 0.08 d-1
- Ratio of BOD5 to BOD u = 0.68
- Ratio of Oxygen to Air by weight = 23.2%
- Air Density = 1.2 Kg/m3
- Efficiency of aeration requirements = 20%
Use the data to calculate the following :
- The volume of aeration tanks, airflow and return sludge ratio.
- Assuming operational & design parameters of the plant are maintained the same and primary effluent
quality did not change, what would be the expected dissolved BOD5 of the final effluent (Se) if the
flow rate is increased by 20%.

Question 7:

The following data were collected during field evaluation of an existing conventional activated sludge
secondary treating municipal wastewater:
- Volume of aeration tank = 2000 m3.
- Influent wastewater flow = 5000 m3/d.
- Wasting sludge = 50 m3/d.
- BOD5 after primary treatment = 280 mg/L.
- Recirculation flow concentration = 8000 mg/L. -
- Ɵc = 15 d, Y=0.55, kd = 0.05 d-1
Use the data to calculate the following :
- Retention period.
- Effluent of BOD5 (Se).
- F/M ratio and volumetric loading.
- Recirculation flow.
