Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

Proving Properties of Parallel Lines

Cut by a Transversal

Most Essential Learning Competency:

proves properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal. M8GE-Ive-1

In this lesson, the learner:

1. Illustrates the different properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal;

2. Proves the different properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal and;
3. Demonstrates appreciation for knowing the different angles formed by parallel lines cut
by a transversal as important in proving properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal.

The goal of this unit is for students to understand the angle theorems related to parallel
lines. This is important not only for the mathematics course, but also in connection to the real
world as parallel lines are used in designing buildings, airport runways, roads, railroad tracks,
bridges, and so much more. Students will work independently to apply the angle theorems to
prove lines that are parallel, to practice geometric proof, and discover the connections to other
topics including relationships with triangles and geometric constructions. It also communicates
mathematical thinking with coherence and clarity in formulating, investigating, analyzing, and
solving real-life problems involving triangle inequalities, and parallelism and perpendicularity of
lines using appropriate and accurate representations.

Directions: Study the road map carefully and try to answer the guide questions below.
ROAD MAP

Guide questions.
1. Which roads intersect?
2. Which roads are parallel?
3. Which roads are perpendicular?

Task 1- The two friends Allen and Alex talk about the map below. Read carefully their
conversations if you will also agree with their statements.

Here are their conversations.

Alex: Allen, P.J. Burgos street is parallel to Jose L. Briones street, so the angles
formed by O shop and A store are supplementary. What can say with the
angles formed by A store and V shop Allen?
Allen: Angles formed by A store and V shop are congruent and so with the angles
Grade 8 Mathematics 5

formed by A store and P store. The angles formed by B shop and C shop are
also congruent. Alex, what can you say about the angles formed by D store and
W store?
Alex: The two angles formed by D store and W store are supplementary.

Guide questions:
1. Is the statement of Allen with the angles formed by O shop and A store correct?
2. How about the statement of Alex with the angles formed by A store and V
shop?
3. Will you agree to the statement of Alex regarding the angles formed by A store
and P store?
4. How about the statement of Alex with the angles formed by B shop and C
shop?
5. Is the statement of Allen about angles formed by D store and W store correct?

Task 2- Proves the following using two-column proof.

1. Given: b∥t
Prove: ∠V ≅ ∠𝑁

2. Given: 1 ∥ 2
Prove: ∠R + ∠𝑁 = 1800

Parallelism: Two lines are parallel if they are coplanar and they do not intersect.
Transversal line: It is a line that intersects two or more coplanar lines, which are not
necessarily parallel at two distinct points.

From the figure at the left, lines 𝒃

and 𝒕 are parallel lines and line 𝒔
is a transversal line.

Task 1

Question 1: Is the statement of Allen with the angles formed by O shop and A
store correct?

Answer: Yes, because the two angles formed by O shop and A store are Same-side
Interior Angles. Same-side Interior Angles Theorem states that, If two
parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the pairs of same-side interior

Grade 8 Mathematics 6
Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

angles are supplementary.

Angles 3, 4, 5, and 6 are interior angles.

∠3 and ∠5 are same-side interior angles
which are supplementary, and so with ∠4
and ∠6.

Same-side Exterior Angles Theorem - If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal,
then the pairs of same-side exterior angles
are supplementary

Angles 1, 2, 7, and 8 are exterior angles.

∠1 and ∠8 are same-side exterior angles
which are supplementary, and so with ∠2
and ∠7.

Question 2: How about the statement of Alex with the angles formed by A store
and V shop?
Answer: No, because the two angles formed by O shop and A store are Linear Pair.
According to the Linear Pair Postulate, two angles that form a linear
pair are supplementary. A linear pair is a set of adjacent angles that form a
straight line. When added together, these angles equal 180 degrees.
Therefore, they are not congruent.
From the figure at the left. The
supplementary angles are:
∠1 and ∠2 ∠1 and ∠3
∠2 and ∠4 ∠3 and ∠4

∠5 and ∠6 ∠5 and ∠8
∠6 and ∠7 ∠7 and ∠8

Question 3: Will you agree to the statement of Alex regarding the angles formed
by A store and P store?

Answer: Yes, because the two angles formed by A store and P store are Alternate
Interior Angles. According to the Alternate Interior Angles Theorem, if two
parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the pairs of alternate interior
angles are congruent.

Angles 3, 4, 5, and 6 are interior

angles. ∠3 and ∠6 are Alternate interior
angles that are congruent, and so with
∠4 and ∠5.

Question 4: How about the statement of Alex with the angles formed by B
Grade 8 Mathematics 7
Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

shop and C shop?

Answer: Yes, because the two angles formed by B shop and C shop are
Alternate Exterior Angles. According to Alternate Exterior Angles
Theorem, if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the pairs of
alternate exterior angles are congruent.

Angles 1, 2, 7, and 8 are exterior angles.

∠1 and ∠7 are Alternate exterior angles that
are congruent, and so with ∠2 and ∠8.

Question 5: Is the statement of Allen about angles formed by D store and W

store correct?
Answer: NO, because the two angles formed by D store and W store are
Alternate Exterior Angles and according to the theorem the angles are
congruent, not supplementary.

Vertical Angles Theorem - states that vertical angles, angles that are opposite
each other and formed by two intersecting straight lines,
are congruent. Vertical angles are always
congruent angles

∠1 & ∠3 and ∠2 & ∠4 are vertical angles, they are

always congruent.

Corresponding Angles Postulate- These are pairs of non-adjacent angles on the

same side of a transversal, in which one is
interior and the other is exterior. If two parallel
lines are cut by a transversal, then the pairs of
corresponding angles are congruent.

∠1, ∠3, ∠5, and ∠8 are on the same side

angles. Since corresponding angles are one
interior and one exterior, thus, ∠1 & ∠5 and ∠3
& ∠8 are corresponding angles. And so with ∠2
& ∠6 and ∠4 & ∠7.

Proving Properties of Parallel lines cut by a Transversal

Before you start proving, you have to familiarize the following Theorems and
Postulates of parallel lines cut by a transversal. Consider the following

Transitive Property of Equality

- If A = B, and B = C, then A=C.

Task 2- Proves the following using two-column proof.

1. Given: b∥t
Prove: ∠N ≅ ∠𝑉

One of the problems in proving statements of parallel lines cut by a transversal is

how to start with the process. Below are the suggested steps.

1. Write the given as the first statement with the reason “given”.
2. Start with the statement to be proven, from the second angle of the statement,
determine a vertical angle and check the relation of that angle to the first angle of
the statement (Corresponding angle or alternate interior angle or alternate
exterior angle to the first angle). This will be the second statement.
3. The third statement will be the vertical angles.
4. The fourth statement of the two-column proof will the statement to be proven and
use transitive property of equality as reason.

Grade 8 Mathematics 9
Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

Solution: Following the steps

1. Write the given as the first statement with the reason “given”.

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given

2. Start with the statement to be proven, from the second angle of the statement,
determine a vertical angle and check the relation of that angle to the first angle of
the statement (Corresponding angle or alternate interior angle or alternate
exterior angle to the first angle). This will be the second statement.
The statement to be proven is ∠V ≅ ∠𝑁, so
the vertical angle to ∠N is ∠𝑪 and it is the
corresponding angle to the first angle ∠V.
So, the second statement is

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠V ≅ ∠𝑪 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate

3. The third statement will be the vertical angles.

The angle vertical to the second angle of the statement is ∠C

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠V ≅ ∠𝑪 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate
3. ∠C ≅ ∠𝑵 3. Vertical Angles Theorem
4. The fourth statement will the statement to be proven with
the reason for using the transitive property of equality.
Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠V ≅ ∠𝑪 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate
3. ∠C ≅ ∠𝑵 3. Vertical Angles Theorem
4. ∠V ≅ ∠𝑁 4. Transitive Property of Equality

Why transitive property of equality?

Since ∠V ≅ ∠𝑪 and ∠C ≅ ∠𝑵, so, ∠V ≅ ∠𝑁.

2. Given: 1 ∥ 2
Prove: 𝑚∠R + 𝑚∠𝑁 = 1800

To prove this kind of statement, follow the suggested steps below,

1. Write the given as the first statement with the reason “given”.
2. Find a congruent angle either Corresponding, Alternate Interior, or
alternate exterior to the first angle of the statement to be proven that is

Grade 8 Mathematics 10
Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

supplementary to the second angle of the statement. This is a second

statement
3. The third statement will be the congruent angle of the first angle of the
statement to be proven plus(+) the second angle of the statement to
be proven and use the reason “Linear Pair Poslute”.
4. Copy the second statement with an equal sign (=) instead of a
congruent symbol and use the reason "Definition of Congruent
Angles".
5. Copy the Statement to be proven and write the reason " Substitution
Property of Equality".

Solutions: Follow the steps.

1. Write the given as the first statement with the reason “given”.

Statements Reasons
1. 1∥2 1. Given

2. Find a congruent angle either Corresponding, Alternate Interior, or

alternate exterior to the first angle of the statement to be proven that is
supplementary to the second angle of the statement. This is a second
statement.
The statement to be proven is
𝑚∠R + 𝑚∠𝑁 = 1800, the first angle is ∠R,
the congruent to ∠R is ∠I for alternate interior
Angles and ∠A for corresponding angles.
And the two are supplementary to ∠R.
Thus we can use either of the two.

Statements Reasons
1. 1∥2 1. Given
2. ∠R ≅ ∠𝑨 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate

3. The third statement will be the congruent angle of the first angle of the
statement to be proven plus(+) the second angle of the statement to
be proven and use the reason “Linear Pair Postulate”.
The congruent angle of ∠R is ∠𝑨, this will be added by the second
angle of the statement which is ∠𝑵. So,

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠R ≅ ∠𝑨 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate
3. 𝑚∠A + 𝑚∠𝑵= 1800 3. Linear Pair Postulate

4. Copy the second statement with an equal sign (=) instead of a

congruent symbol and use the reason "Definition of Congruent
Angles".

Grade 8 Mathematics 11
Proving Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠R ≅ ∠𝑨 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate
3. ∠A + ∠𝑵= 1800 3. Linear Pair Postulate
4. ∠R = ∠𝑨 4. Defintion of Congruent Angles

5. Copy the Statement to be proven and write the reason " Substitution
Property of Equality".

Statements Reasons
1. b∥t 1. Given
2. ∠R ≅ ∠𝑨 2. Corresponding Angles Postulate
3. ∠A + ∠𝑵= 1800 3. Linear Pair Postulate
4. ∠R = ∠𝑨 4. Defintion of Congruent Angles
5. 𝑚∠R + 𝑚∠𝑁 = 1800 5. Substitution Property of Equality".

Why substitution property equality?

Because from 𝑚∠A + 𝑚∠𝑵= 1800, we will substitute ∠A with ∠R since

∠R = ∠𝑨, thus, 𝑚∠R + 𝑚∠𝑁 = 1800.
In statement number 2 you can also have this,
