8.11-8.12 Answer Key

The document discusses calculating the volume of a bagel through slicing and integration. It involves tracing half a bagel, slicing it lengthwise, measuring the slices, and using an integral of the difference between inner and outer radii to find the exact volume.

What’s the Volume of a Bagel?

Key
Name:___________________________

Bagels are known for their distinctive shape and general deliciousness. A bagel,
mathematically known as a torus, is round, but can’t be considered a sphere or a
cylinder, so our volume formulas from Geometry won’t help us out. Today we’ll do
another food lab to explore a new method for calculating volume.

1. What strategies could you use to find the volume of the bagel? How is this the same or different
from finding the volume of the pear?

similar to pear but

2. Let’s see if we can get a graphical representation of the bagel.

a. Cut your bagel in half, crosswise (not how you would slice it to put cream cheese on it).
b. Take one bagel half and center it on the y-axis, so the flat sides are on the coordinate
grid.
c. Trace the part of the bagel that is above the x-axis onto the coordinate grid. What shape
do you get? circle

3. What would you have to do to the region you drew in question 2 in order to get the bagel
shape?
a
. Rotate around the x-axis
4. Now that we have a graphical representation of our bagel, let’s go back to finding the volume.
Since our formulas from Geometry won’t work, let’s use the slicing technique that we used with
the pear. Using a whole bagel, slice the bagel lengthwise into as many slices as you can.
a. Are the slices identical? Why or why not?

NO , slices in the middle are bigger

b. How would you describe the shape of each of these slices?

⑧ 5. Use a ruler (cm) to measure the following dimensions. Then calculate the volume of each slice
and the total volume.

6. Use a green colored pencil to outline the part of the region in question 2 that determines the
outer radius. Use a blue colored pencil to outline the part of the region that determines the
inner radius.

7. Let’s call the red curve "($) and the blue curve &($). Write an integral expression that would
give the exact volume of the bagel.
