English.

What Are Long Vowels?

Long vowels are vowels that are pronounced for a longer duration than
their short counterparts. In English, there are five long vowels:

1. A ( /eɪ/ ): Think of words like "cake" and "bake." The 'A' sound is long
and pronounced like "ay."

2. E ( /iː/ ): Consider words like "see" and "tree." The 'E' sound is long
and sounds like "ee."

3. I ( /aɪ/ ): Words like "bike" and "kite" showcase the long 'I' sound,
which is pronounced like "ai."

4. O ( /oʊ/ ): "Boat" and "coat" illustrate the long 'O' sound, similar to
"oh."

5. U ( /juː/ )**: "Cute" and "tube" contain the long 'U' sound, pronounced
like "yoo."

To practice long vowels, try reading these short stories aloud to become
familiar with the sounds of long vowels:

a. The Mysterious Kite

One sunny day, Tim found a colorful kite in his yard. It had a long tail
that swayed in the breeze. He thought, "I'm going to fly this kite
high." As he tugged on the string, the kite soared into the sky. Tim
watched it climb and thought, "This is so much fun."

b. The Talking Parrot

Emily had a pet parrot named Polly. Polly was quite the chatterbox.
Whenever Emily entered the room, Polly would say, "Hello, Emily!" It
always made her smile. Emily enjoyed listening to Polly's amusing
stories, especially when the parrot mimicked funny voices.

c. A Day at the Beach

Alex and Lily decided to spend the day at the beach. They brought a
big, colorful umbrella to provide shade. The sea waves made a
soothing sound, and the kids built a sandcastle. While they played,
they found beautiful seashells that they collected as souvenirs.

d. The Wise Old Owl

In a tall oak tree, there lived an old owl named Oliver. He had a deep,
hooting voice and was known for his wisdom. Animals from the
nearby forest often visited Oliver to seek his advice. The owl would sit
perched on a branch and share his insights with everyone who came
to listen.

e. The Amazing Pie

Grandma baked a delicious apple pie. The aroma filled the house,
and as she cut a slice, the warm filling oozed out. She gave a piece to
her granddaughter, Lily, who exclaimed, "This is the best pie ever!"
Lily savored each bite, enjoying the sweet taste of apples and
cinnamon.

Congratulations! You've learned about long vowels and how to identify

and pronounce them. Keep practicing, and soon you'll be a long vowel
