WHAT IS LISTENING ?

- Listening is hearing with a purpose


- The process of receiving,constructing and responding to a spoken message.

HOW TO TEACH LISTENING?


- Teachers may use relevant texts as students need a purpose for listening. In order to gain
student’s attention during teaching listening, teachers may employ using motivating texts that
are related to the student’s interest and needs.
- For example : using songs,radio announcements,conversations or weather forecasts.

WHEN TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO LISTEN, TEACHERS SHOULD :


- Ask students to look for keywords
- Look for non-verbal cues. For example : posture,facial expressions, eye contact,tone of voice etc.
- Associate information with prior knowledge
- Guess the meaning from context

HOW TO CHECK FOR LISTENING COMPREHENSION (ASSESS/EVALUATE)


a. Doing ( students listens to a command and carry out the action plan, for example, teacher
give instruction to read out a passage and students will do exactly as told)
b. Choosing ( students hear what is listed by the teacher and choose the correct
objects/pictures related to what has been stated by the teacher)
c. Transferring (Teacher plays and audio or say something then students will draw a picture
based on what they comprehend or based on what they have heard)
d. Extending ( Teacher recite a story then ask students to produce the ending to a story or
teacher can start a sentence, then ask students to continue extending the sentence until it
becomes a full story)
e. Conversing ( teachers may ask students to do pick a partner and converse/interact with one
another, students are required to reply appropriately )
f. Answering ( teachers may play an audio and give out worksheet containing true false
questions or directly ask questions and ask students to answer whether it is true or false)

Approaches
a) Naturist approach
- For language acquisition, the theory purpose that children have inbuilt ability to organize and
comprehend fundamental laws and structures of language.
- Noam Chomsky
- Influenced by language environment ( For example : Children born in England would grow up
hearing English, therefore they will learn to speak English naturally.)
- LAD (Language Acquisition Device) is a unique human trait, triggered once they hear speech.
b) Behavioural approach
- To show students how they should react and respond to certain stimuli
- Done in a repetitive way to remind students what behaviour that the teacher wants
-For example, use positive reinforcement to motivate students to act a certain desired behaviour.
(teaching grammar, when students uses the right grammar teacher will rewards then, listening,
when teacher give instruction, students follow, give rewards.)
c) Functional approach
- Focuses on mental processes which involves consciousness
- For example, sharing information,express attitude, arguments and constructing ideas (debate)
