Physical Science Module 12
Physical Science Module 12
Introduction
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the Active
Ingredients in Product Labels. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
Objective:
(All the activities are not graded but essential for you to understand the lesson. The
basis of your score will be the “Lets Practice”.)
Objective: This activity will allow you to tell the different cleaning agents frequently used at
home. Direction: Below are drawings of cleaning agents. Can you name them?
1.________________ 2._______________ 3.______________

All products contain an active ingredient that enables it to work. Some of them only have one
active ingredient, while others contain more than one. Cleaning managers choose their active
ingredients based on performance and desired effect, but it may not be enough just knowing
what the products do. So, knowing the “active ingredients”, usually in a water solution form the
backbone of cleaning ingredients.
Active Ingredient
o is the compound that acts to fulfill the function of the said product.
o is the reactive and functional ingredient of a household product.
o may have several mechanisms where it can remove stains from acid base, oxidation-
reduction, disinfectants, surfactants and dissolution (solvent-solute interaction).
o in cleaning products are usually antimicrobial pesticides added to kill bacteria, viruses,
or molds.
All products have an active ingredient that enables it to work. Some products only have one
active ingredient while others may have more the one. The following are some of the factors you
need to know and consider in knowing the active ingredients of a product.
1. Active ingredient can be acidic, basic, or neutral.
2. The determination of its acidity or alkalinity often indicates how the product will work.
3. Active ingredient must always be indicated in the product’s label.
When is the last time you actually read the label of a cleaning product? Do you know that it is
important to read the label of chemicals you used? Today, we are going to look at product labels
and identify the active ingredient in them.
Objective: This activity will let you identify the active ingredients listed in the product
label of the common cleaning products.
Direction: The following are samples of product labels. Can you identify their active
ingredients?
1.________________
2.________________
3. ________________ 4. ________________
Objective: In this activity, you will identify the active ingredients in a certain cleaning product.
Direction: Column A are lists of active ingredients. Column B are the products. Match Column
A with Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided.
Column A Column B

Objective: This activity will allow you to remember the importance of active igredients in
cleaning products.
Direction: Fill in the blanks to complete the paragraph.
The active ingredients can be classified as ____________, ____________ or
________________. The active ingredients may always be labeled in ____________________.
_____________________ are required to put their active ingredients. Some of these ingredients
maybe toxic to the _______________ or even to the ___________________. In some case a
few household products will have the same _________________ allowing them to be used
for_______________________.
Let’s Practice!
Create a self-video on how to use cleaning products used at home.
Explain the possible side effects when accidental intake by humans and remedy of the scenario.
Show us on the cleaning products can be used correctly.
What are the alternative cleaning agents that are abundant in the environment when the
cleaning agent is not available?
