INTRODUCTION

Push-up exercise is a close chain kinetic exercise which improves the joint
proprioception, joint stability and muscle co-activation around the shoulder joint.
Push-ups activate a large number of muscles together, increasing the demand on
the heart muscle and the respiratory rate.

PROCEDURE OF THE TEST

1. The starting 'up' position is with the hands placed shoulder width apart with
fingers pointing
forward and feet together on a level surface. The arms are fully extended with
only hands and
feet touching the ground.
3. Lower your body to the floor until your arms are bent at right angles. Keep
your back straight
at all times.
4. Return to the up position with your arms fully extended. This is one repetition.
5. Resting is permitted only in the 'up' position.
6. Repeat the action for one minute.
7. The total number of push-ups in one minute is recorded as the score. Any
incorrectly
performed push-ups are not counted.
8. Compare the results to the norms below

EQUIPMENT

Push-ups require no equipment other than a hard surface. Push-ups target

the chest muscles
and triceps, but the biceps, and muscles in the forearms and back are also
involved in the
movement. In addition, your abdominal muscles are required to stabilise
your body as you
perform each push-up.
