ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION

Important formulae: In an arithmetic progression with first term a and the common
difference d,
 Tn = a + (n – 1)d
n n
 Sn = 2 [2a + (n – 1) d] = 2 × [first term + last term]
= n × Average of the series
a,  a 2  .....a n
 AM = n

1. Which of the following statements are not true regarding an arithmetic

progression?
(a). An AP is defined by two things: the first term (a) and the common
difference (d). If these are known then any term or the sum up to any term can
be found out.
(b). The sum of the kth term from the beginning and the kth term from the end
is constant and equal to twice the average of the series.
(c). The n/2th term is the middle term of the series.
(d). If the sum of the places of two terms adds up to n+1, then they are equal
to twice the average of the series.

2. Find Tn and Sn for following series.

(a). 1, 4, 7, 10..... till 12th term

(b). -18, -11, - 4, 3, 10..... till 15th term

3. Find the sum up to 11 terms of an AP, if

(a). First term (a) = 7 and common difference (d) = 2

(b). T4 = 24 and T8= 36

(e). T3 = 15 and T5 = 19

(f). T6 = 10

(g). S5 = S6
PROGRESSION Algebra

(h). S5 = 6 and S6 = 5

(a). If there are three terms in AP, the terms are taken as: a – d, a, a + d.
(b). If there are five terms in AP, the terms are taken as:
a – 2d, a – d, a, a + d, a + 2d.
(c). If there are four terms in AP, the terms are taken as:
a – 3d, a – d, a + d, a + 3d.
(d). If we have to insert n arithmetic means between two numbers a and b,
then, b = a + (n+1)d and d = b  a
n  1

4. Sum of 3 terms in AP is 18 and product of extreme terms is 20. Find the terms.

5. Consider 2 sequences,
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, . . . . . 103 and 4, 8, 12, 16, . . . . . 123
Find how many terms are common to both the sequences.

ratio r,
 Tn = a.rn-1

a rn  1 (r.Last term - first term)

a
S  , where | r ||
 1  r
 GM = n a1 . a2 .....an .
 If n is odd, product of n terms in GP will be equal to (middle term)n
 If n GMs are introduced between two numbers a and b, making a and b the first
and last terms respectively, then b = a.r(n+1)
