“Lien se lankstaanskoene” – Derick van der Walt


Chapter Guide, Part Two
This is the second part of our Lien guide, which will provide small notes on the content of each
chapter of Lien se lankstaanskoene, helping you to quickly locate important events. This second part
will cover Chapter 22, ‘Ietsie chocolate vir poeding’ through to ‘Naspel’.

Please bear in mind that this guide does not contain all the information that you need to know from
Lien; it is intended as a quick reference guide.

22 – Ietsie chocolate vir poeding:

Lien spends a weekend at Miemie’s house and feels like a celebrity.

23 – Die welcome-home-Mammie-ding

Hein asks Lien to go the Matric Dance with him; Hein vra Lien na die Matriekafskeid. Christien comes
home; ma kom terug huis toe.

24 – Die toppie sonder Bates

Lien’s 18th birthday; Lien se 18de verjaarsdag.

25 – Halfprys is halfprys

Lien, Roos, Tibbey and Magriet go to Spar for half-price baked beans and cause a scene. It turns out
the special is on at Checkers, not Spar. Halfprys gebakteboontjies by Checker nie Spar nie. Sproet
comes back.

26 – Cheers op Binnelandse Sake

Christien no longer works at the Department of Home Affairs; Christien werk nie meer by
Departement van Binndelandse Sake. Christien drinks again, Lien drinks with her; Lien drink saam.
Christien goes back to rehab; ma gaan terug kliniek toe.

27 – Die town clown

The town clown is Christiaan, the class leader. Lien begs during school hours; Lien bedel gedurende
skoolure. She writes a letter “from her mother” and gives it to Christiaan to excuse herself from
school; sy tik ‘n brief ‘van haar ma’ en gee dit vir Christiaan die klasleier.

28 – Something for the poor, my koning

Tibbey gets hit by a car; hy word raakgery. Sproet (Gordon) takes Lien to his flat and touches her;
Sproet vat Lien na syy woonstel toe en vataan Lien.

29 – Wat is sy van nou weer?

Dirkie phones hospitals in search of Tibbey; Dirkie bel hospitale opsoek na Tibbey. Lien misses her
mother and sends an SMS; Lien verlang na haar ma – stuur SMS.

30 – Die Grafsteensangers

We discover that Tibbey has lost his legs; Tibbey se bene is af.

31 – Die corner sonder entertainment

Tibbey’s corner is quiet; Tibbey se hoek is stil.

32 – Iets wat Picasso kon bedink het

Hein shows Lien his sketches of Tibbey’s little car; Hein wys Lien sy tekeninge van Tibbey se karretjie.

33 – Geldig vir dertig dae

The title refers to the quote Hein gives Lien for Tibbey’s car; verwys na Hein se kwotasie. Lien visits
Tibbey in hospital; sy besoek vir Tibbey in hospitaal.

34 – Shopping is nie vir sissies nie

Lien gets Tibbey the room at the bowling club; Lien kry vir Tibbey die kamer by die rolbalklub.
Donovan wants Lien to come back to Creations; Donovan wil hê sy moet weer kom werk by
Creations. Lien says no. Johnny gives Lien R102.49 for the car for Tibbey; Johnny gee vir Lien R102.49
vir Tibbey se karretjie.

35 – Werk dinge in Londen ook so?

Tibbey gets his car; Tibbey kry sy karretjie. Lien goes to the rehab to visit her mother but turns
around and walks away; Lien gaan kliniek toe maar draai om en stap weg.

36 – Cool, sou ek sê, actually

Tibbey wakes up and is cheerful again; Tibbey ontwaak en is weer vrolik. Miemie shows Lien her
tattoo of a broom; Miemie wys vir Lien haar tatoeërmerk van ‘n besem.

37 – Koue goed in groot glase

Lien bunks school to beg; Lien draai stokkies om te bedel. Kuifie sees her and forces her to get into
his car; Kuifie sien haar en dwing hair om in te klim. He offers her the church’s money; hy bied die
kerk se geld aan. Lien discovers Braam watching old videos; Lien ontdek vir Braam wat ou video’s
kyk. Lien accepts the job at Creations and stops begging; Lien aanvaar die werk by Creations en hou
op met bedel.

38 – Die ding met die kuif

Lien enjoys her work at Creations; Lien werk lekker by Creations. She visits Tibbey and Roos; sy gaan
kuier vir Tibbey en Roos.

39 – Die besoek (1)

Lien visits her mother at the clinic; Lien kuier vir haar ma in die kliniek.

40 – Die besoek (2)

Lien goes to jail to visit her father; Lien gaan tronk toe om vir haar pa te kuier.

41 – ‘n Bietjie kultuur

The night of the play; die aand van di toneelstuk. Christien plays the piano; ma speel die klavier. Lien
is invited out by her friends; Lien word uitgenooi saam met vriende.

Naspel

Shows Lien’s family in the future; Lien se gesin in die toekoms. Ma, Pa, Braam, Lien and Hein on
holiday in the Cape; met vakansie in die Kaap. Lien is studying Drama at the University of Pretoria;
Lien swot Drama op Tukkies.
