Mock Interview Assignment

Before the Interview


1. Select a job that you would like to apply for (assuming you are a student looking for
part-time employment).

2. Who is one person you could ask to conduct a practice interview with you before the
real thing? (TIP: Choose someone who is well-versed in participating in interviews and
has been successful in attaining employment)
3. Describe what you would wear to an interview to show that you are dressed
professionally and appropriately.
4. If the interview is set for 5 o’clock PM, describe what you would do in the 2 hours
leading up to the interview to prepare.
5. When you leave for the interview, what should you bring with you?
6. When you arrive at the interview site, what should you do?
7. Describe how you would greet the interviewer.

During the Interview


Answer the following questions as if you were being asked them by a potential
employer. Be sure to use full sentences, be professional, stay on topic, and provide examples
wherever possible.
1. Tell me about yourself. (TIP: Tell me about yourself regarding your professional
readiness, not your entire life story)
2. What do you like to do in your spare time?
3. Tell me about an achievement that makes you proud.
4. What hours are you available to work?
5. Do you have transportation to/from work?
6. Why do you think you might like to work as a __________________? (TIP: Tell me how you
are qualified and why you think you would be a good fit for this position)
7. What do you know about our company/business?
8. What qualifications do you have that make you feel you would be successful in this
role? (TIP: Think of things that will help you stand out from your peers)
9. Define cooperation and explain why it is important in the workforce. (TIP: Think of a
time when you used cooperation and use it as an example)
10. Why should I hire you? (TIP: Employers want to hear examples of why you’re better
than your competitors)
11. What is your biggest weakness? (TIP: Always state a weakness- everyone has them.
However, make sure that you can turn your weakness into a positive. For example,
_____________ may be a challenge but _____________ is how I handle it)
12. How do you work under pressure? (TIP: Use examples of times when you have worked
under pressure and how you handled it/ persevered)
13. What have you done that shows initiative and a willingness to work? (TIP: Now is the
time to brag about your work ethic. Provide examples.)
14. What is your greatest strength? (TIP: Choose a strength that applies to the job you are
interviewing for- this way you can explain how it would benefit the company/business
to hire you)
15. Name three characteristics that best describe you. (TIP: Provide examples of how you
demonstrate these characteristics)
16. What are your long-term career plans/ plans after high school?
17. Tell me about a time that you had to deal with conflict. How was it resolved? (TIP:
Choose a situation that reflects positively on you)
18. Do you have any questions for me? (TIP: Always ask at least one question. It shows that
you have done your research and are interested in the company/business)
19. If I called your references, what would they say about you? (TIP: Think about the 3
references you cited on your resume. What would each one say?)
20. Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t discussed yet? (TIP: This is your
opportunity to convince the employer that you are a serious candidate with much to
offer their company/business. And…don’t forget to thank them for their time!)

After the Interview

2. What should you do if you don’t hear anything from the interviewer by the agreed
upon date/time?
3. If the employer calls you to offer you a job, how would you respond?

Remember: It takes time to become confident and well-versed at interviewing. Take the time
to prepare and the process will get a little bit easier every time!
