1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assignment utilizes the approach of problem-based learning related to material balance. This
assignment is motivated by understanding the fundamental of material balance in solving and analysing
the problem given.

2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEMS &
KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment/project/design addresses one (1) course outcomes and one (1) programme outcomes
(PO) which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required
knowledge profiles (WK) as shown in Table 1.

However, for solving the complex engineering problems (CPS), only 15% from the addressed problem will
be covered.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

a) Apply the fundamental knowledge/basic concepts taught in the classroom to directly relate to
engineering problems.
b) Participate actively to engineering topic in designing a chemical plant, especially on the material
balance, single phase systems and multi phase systems.
c) Analyse the identified problem and evaluate the solution.

4.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT

A chemical company propose to build an ammonia production plant using Haber process method to
produce pure liquid ammonia. As a group of engineers in the company, you are assigned to write a
material balance proposal for the plant.

5.0 STUDENT INSTRUCTION

a) Introduce background of the product including the raw materials, reaction equation involved in the
process and application of the product. The introduction should be supported with related references.

b) Propose a simple flow diagram of the process with complete labelling, which consists of feed mixer,
reactor and separator as the main equipment. For optimum production, the unreacted reactants
should be recycled and purging is introduced to prevent accumulation of recycled reactants in the
system. (non-CPS)

c) State basis of calculation and solve the material balance when overall conversion of process is
within 80-90 %. Several suitable assumptions should be introduced in solving the material balance,
such as basis of calculation, single pass conversion (50-60)% and compound ratio in the fresh feed
stream.

d) Present the material balance summary (from part c) in table form. The summary should consist of
the mole and mass flow rates of each stream. Material balance of the process should be validated by
comparing the mass in and mass out of each unit operation, which lead to a conclusion of the
proposed design.
e) Fresh N2 gas of one (1) kmole is stored in a 500 L tank before use in the production. The gas
temperature should be set within a range of 150-200 oC. Identify the suitable pressure to be set for
the storage when the gas behaviour is considered as i) an ideal gas (ideal gas equation of state) and
ii) non-ideal gas (compressibility-factor equation of state). Compare the difference between the
calculated pressure. Comment on the behavior of the gas (idea or non-ideal) and conclude which
equation of state should be considered in solving the problem.

f) The gas product stream from the reactor which consists of ammonia and un-reacted reactant is fed
to a liquid-gas separator. Objective of the separator is to condense the ammonia and recycle the
unreacted reactant. In the separator, the gas mixture is in equilibrium with its liquid. The liquid phase
consists only of ammonia leaving the separator as a liquid outlet stream. On the other hand, the gas
phase consists of non-condensable raw materials N2 and H2 leaves the separator as a recycle
stream. Composition of the outlet gas and liquid streams from the separator are as in part c). Use
the process condition and Raoult’s law, determine suitable temperature (T) of the separator when
system pressure (P) is set within the range of 8-10 atm. To determine the T, please state which
condition should be considered between bubble point temperature and dew point temperature; and
justify the choice. You may use goal seek in excel in solving the problem.

Some errors are detected during the process and suddenly the temperature of the separator
increases to double the T value. Comment on how the temperature affects the efficiency of the
separator when pressure is set to constant.
