INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

A school canteen is a space where students and faculty staff can purchase food to satisfy their hunger.

It offers nutritious and affordable meals and snacks that appeal to students' taste buds and encourage them

to eat healthily. Canteens also serve as learning opportunities for students to practice skills in home

economics, food preparation, and nutrition education.

This study aims to examine the perceptions of the students of Natonin Stand Alone Senior High School

regarding the management of the school canteen, whether private individuals or school personnel operate

it.

According to some global-related studies, most of the school councils make the financial decisions of

everyday life in the school as used by the employees and students; in addition, the governing council might

have the authority to manage and engage canteen services to empower and raise their funds. The school

counselor on the product instructed the canteen manager to call it a unique fundraising event that should be

included in order for them to increase profit. However, some of the students and parents demand higher

food prices.

According to Bartlby Research (2014), more than the prices are needed to sell the products. The

findings of this study can help the school to improve the canteen operations and enhance customer

satisfaction of the students and teachers.

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A study by Lobron De Guzman and Malinao (2023) investigated the relationship between the

management of school canteens and student satisfaction with food services in Pantukan, Davao De Oro,

Philippines. They utilized Pearson correlation to analyze data and discovered a significant positive

association between these two variables. Additionally, the researchers identified staffing, food services,

facilities, and financial stability as indicators of effective school canteen management.

A study conducted by De Jesus and Torres (2021) examined the management of canteens and vendors

on a state university campus in Palayan City, Philippines. They utilized descriptive methods to profile the

canteen and vendors and assessed their compliance with health and safety standards. The researchers

also evaluated the satisfaction level of students and employees with the canteen and vendor service.

Tumpang (2020) conducted a study on the effect of school canteen services on students' academic

performance in Mountain Province General Comprehensive High School (MPGCHS), Philippines. He used

a correlational method to gather data from 150 students and ten teachers. He showed that the school

canteen services positively affected students' academic performance, as measured by their grades and

attendance. He also demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between the school canteen

services and the academic performance of students.

In a research paper by Almazan and Pascual (2019), the quality of canteen services and student

satisfaction was investigated in a state university in the Philippines. The researchers employed the

SERVQUAL model to gauge service quality dimensions and discovered a discrepancy between the

canteen's expected and perceived service quality. Notably, the study found that student satisfaction was

influenced by tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy.

Balangcod (2019) examined the knowledge, attitude, and practices of school canteen personnel on food

safety in Mountain Province. They used a questionnaire to collect data from 30 school canteen personnel

from 10 public secondary schools. They also showed a significant relationship between knowledge and

attitudes and between attitudes and practices.

7
Pascua (2019) conducted a study on the satisfaction and loyalty of students towards the school canteen

services in Mountain Province State Polytechnique College (MPSPC), Philippines. He used the SEVQUAL

model to measure the service quality dimensions and the customer satisfaction index to measure customer

satisfaction and loyalty. Pascua surveyed 384 students from different academic programs. He discovered

that the students were satisfied with the school canteen's service quality, especially on tangibility and

assurance aspects. He also found that the students were loyal to the school canteen and willing to

recommend it to others.

Bantasan and Dacanay (2018) studied schools' management practices and problems in Mountain

Province, Philippines. They used a descriptive survey to gather data from 12 school canteens and 240

students. They discovered that the school canteens were well-managed in planning, organizing, staffing,

directing, and controlling. However, they also encountered problems such as needing more space,

equipment, personnel, budget, and training.
