Preliminary Activities (5 minutes)

a. Prayer
Good morning everyone but before we start let us all stand Amen
for our opening prayer
Students, who wants to lead the prayer?
b. Greetings
Good morning, students. Good morning, Sir.

Before we continue, Let’s sing the song

“Oh, it’s science time after all”.
1, 2, 3 and sing.

Oh, it’s science time after all (4x) (Students are

c. Checking of Attendance
Say present if you are here!
Since there’s nobody absent today. Give a big clap for
yourself! Present!

d. Recalling of the Classroom Rules

But before we start to our new lesson, I will present to you
our rules during class hour.

Is it okay to you that we will having a rule during our science

time?

Okay, thank you!

For our rule number;
Rule #1. Do not sleep during class hour
Rule #2. Do not play inside the classroom
Rule #3. Raise your hand if you want to answer
So, what are the 3 rules during science time?

Reviewing the previous lesson

(Elicit- 5 minutes)

Do you still remember the lesson that was discuss last week? (Students are
Who can still remember? raising their hand)

Yes, James? Last week we

discuss about the
Okay, very good james! types of volcano
based on their
activity.
What are the three types of volcano based on their activity?
Sir
Yes jewel
Active, inactive and
Very good! extinct .
Establishing a purpose (motivation)
(ENGAGE-10 minutes)

Before we proceed, lets check your knowledge about

volcanoes using the statements below.

Activity: FACT or BLUFF (Answer varies)

(Everyone reads)
Direction: write the name of your crush if the statements is
TRUE then write your surname if the statement is FALSE.

____1. All volcano are cone-shape

____2. Volcanoes are found only on land

____3. A volcano has an opening at the top (or in some case,

on the side)

____4. Hot thick cloud of gas, molten rocks and ash come
out a volcano’s opening

____5. All volcanoes erupt violently

____6. If the volcano does not produce lava, it is not

dangerous.

____7. Volcanoes are describe according to their shape and

type of eruption.

____8. A volcanic eruption happens when there is an

earthquake beneath the earth’s crust.

____9. The pressure of the dissolve gas building up in the

magma causes a volcanic eruption.

____10. Volcanoes only erupt straight up through the top

vent and not on the sides.
Class! Did you enjoy our Activity?

Great! Yes sir

For our new lesson this will be our objectives.

Please read everyone.

At the end of the

lesson, the learners
should be able to:

a) define volcanic
eruption
b) identify factors
that affect the
viscosity of
magma
c) describe the
types of
volcanic
eruption

(Explore-15 minutes)

Before we proceed in our discussion let us first watch a video (answer may vary
about the types of volcanic eruption. And later we will be based on their

Since you have an idea about the types of eruption and the
factors affecting viscosity of magma. Lets have a group
activity.

I will divide you into three groups and each group will
receive a task regarding in our topic today.

Developing mastery leads to Assessment
(Explain- 15 minutes) (students raising their
hands)
Volcanic eruption happens when magma, gases
and other molten materials are discharged from the
opening. Since volcanic eruptions are caused by
magma expelled onto the earth's surface, we must
first identify the factors that affect the viscosity of the
magma.

There are some factor affecting the viscosity of

magma, one of the factor is the chemical (students raising their
composition. hands)

Class! How the chemical composition affects the sir

viscosity of magma?

Magma with high silica

Yes clark. content is more viscous
than those with low silica
content.

Very good!
Magma with high silica content is more viscous than
those with low silica content. It is too viscous so it
does not travel far, and tends to break up as it flows.
The magma that contains less silica is relatively fluid,
so it travels far before solidifying. magma with less
silica content

Sir
How about the amount of gases dissolve?
When magma has high
Yes john amount of gas, magma
with low amount of gas
lava flow is less viscous
and increases its ability to
flow.

Correct!
When magma has high amount of gas (mainly water
vapor), magma with low amount of gas lava flow is
less viscous and increases its ability to flow. Magma
has high viscosity when it columnar dome has low
amount of gas as it rises. The ability of the lava to
flow decreases, so it piles up at a vent resulting into a
columnar or a dome.

Additionally, temperature also affects the viscosity of

magma. The higher the temperature of magma, the
lower is its viscosity. As lava flows, it travels far
before it begins to magma with high temperature
harden. On the other hand, if the temperature of
magma islower, the higher is its viscosity so the lava
does not travel far.

Volcanoes erupt differently and not all of them are

violent. Magma can explode from the vent, or it can
flow out of the volcano. In addition to the top vent,
magma and gas may escape through cracks and weak
areas on the sides of the volcano.

Here are some types of volcanic eruption

First is the Phreatic or hydrothermal

Sir

Strombolian eruptions

Who can describe the type of explosion of plinian

Give yourself a round of applause

Class! Do you have any question or clarifications?

Now that you have a deeper understanding of

volcanoes, I have a question for you.
Finding practical applications of concepts and skills
in daily living
(Elaborate- 10 minutes)

What do you think are the advantages of volcanic

eruption?
Sir

Yes jeat Volcanic ash produces very

fertile soil, which is ideal
for farming.
